Jeez. Here are people who have families, love their country, and are headed out to G-d knows where. May I politcally incorrectly say that North Korea, China, and Syria pose greater threats? Since they are nuclear? Give me closed borders, Star Wars technology, and immediate expulsion of illegals. Problem solved.

Here are people who have families, love their country, and are headed out to G-d knows where. Just like everybody else in the military. It comes with the job.
We're dealing with North Korea as we speak. Syria is not a more serious threat to us than Saddam. China... Well, sorting China out is going to be an awfully big job. I don't see how waiting till we sort out Iraq before we get to China is going to hurt anything. Once we get Iraq, we'll be able to sort out our real target in the Middle East anyway- Saudi Arabia. It's all going to fall into place, don't worry.

Defense never wins wars. You must take the battle (and the pain, death and destruction) to your enemy's home ground, not fight defensively on your own territory. Unless you defeat him utterly and completely, to the point where there is nowhere on earth he can use as a home base, he will never stop in his efforts to destroy you. And sooner or later, one of his shots will get through, no matter how perfect you think your defense is.

Well, I do worry because I have all of these boys. And the Vietnam draft is a strong memory for me. But if you want a really great book, read the early Clancey book; I think it's called something about the "Red Sun Rising". Can't remember, but it's all about Iceland and WWII.

Maybe "Red Storm Rising".

"Give me closed borders, Star Wars technology, and immediate expulsion of illegals. Problem solved." This is far more serious and complicated, hunkering down will not work.

Well, I do worry because I have all of these boys. Well, tell 'em not to join the military if you're that worried. Nobody's going to force them. I personally didn't care if my folks worried about me or not when I was in. It was what I wanted to do with my life. If I got killed- oh well. That's seriously how I felt about it, my life, my decision. I can certainly understand if some people don't want to get involved in the military, but then- they don't have to.
Red Storm Rising was a good book. But I recall it being about World War Three. There's no more Soviet invasion of Europe to worry about. It was fiction anyway. You want an outstanding book that chronicles how real citizen soldiers served and felt about serving- and not just serving but knowing they would likely be killed? Read "Band of Brothers" by Stephen Ambrose. I think that book should be required reading in High School. America lost something when that generation passed the mantle on to the baby boomers.

America lost something when that generation passed the mantle on to the baby boomers.
We boomers rejected that mantle in favor of tie-dyed t-shirts.

The New York Times reported on Saturday that Army units would include military police, engineers and supply specialists and that the Navy was planning to notify at least 1,000 ship cargo specialists and other port workers. These are the guys that will move the bombs, bullets and beans for the larger group of troops to be called up later. It's sign that things are starting to happen. In Dessert Storm I, some of the first call ups were of just these sorts of folks.

Well, I will read "Band of Brothers' upon your recommendation. What you forgot in your response was the lottery/draft during Vietnam. There WAS force to join the service then (except for folks like Clinton who lied, and beat the system). I remember how all mothers feel about sending their sons to war (except for those sick mothers who consider Jihad a ticket to paradise). Women historically hate war. We don't like to see our sons and husbands die.

PS "Red Storm Rising" was about WWII.

When I asked my son if he was sure he wanted to enlist in the Navy for 6 years, I'm proud to say he answered immediately, "Now is when my country needs me the most."
I only hope there are a few liberals out there to fight alongside our sons with pride instead of begrudging the decision to go to war.
I too hate war...but then I'm not too fond of dentistry either. Sometimes we just have to go! : )

What you forgot in your response was the lottery/draft during Vietnam. Oh, I didn't forget it- it's just irrelevent now. We no longer have the draft. Haven't had it for quite some time. Nobody is going to get drafted to go and depose Saddam. Don't worry about it. If your sons don't sign on the dotted line, they're not going to be involved in it. Even if they did sign on the dotted line right now, the war would likely be over before they ever got out of basic trainin.
PS "Red Storm Rising" was about WWII.
Uhh, no. It was about WWIII. There were Stealth Fighters, B52s, Abrams battle tanks, helicopters in the battle. We didn't have all that back then. But don't take my word for it, here's part of a review of the book at Amazon.com
Red Storm Rising is Clancy's second book and also on of the best. Even thought it was the second book he published, it is the last book in the series I have read. The main plot concerns World War Three...
If memory serves, the war got kicked off because of fuel/oil crisis in the Soviet Union. The American Army who were already in Germany (meaning it had to be post WWII) took a pretty good beating in their efforts to hold off the Red Army. Towards the end, the Generals were considering whether or not to use tactical nukes. We didn't have tactical nukes in WWII. It was definitely about the Third World War.

Actually with the Chinese acquiring Sunburn missiles some of the events in the book are possible. The Sunburn is a big threat. There is much concern about it and not much that can be done at the present time to defend against it.
