THE ATTEMPT TO UNDO AN ELECTION: I MAY BE RELUCTANTLY CHANGING MY MIND ON LOTT
dfu | 12-2002 | dfu

Posted on 12/14/2002 8:18:17 AM PST by doug from upland

I have wanted Trent Lott removed from leadership since Impeachment. The spineless weasel had the votes to bring live witnesses before the Senate on national television that would have revealed the extent of Bill Clinton's sexual predator history.

David Schippers called it a SELLOUT. Schippers was absolutely correct. Could the prosecutors have changed enough minds to get 67 votes? We will never know. They should have had the opportunity to try. Lott is the one who stood in the way.

The RATS have been in turmoil since the midterm elections. They were shocked to their core. And now, Lott puts his foot in his mouth to give them the opportunity for which they have waited.

The same people who were not concerned with rape, perjury, obstruction of justice, intimidation of witnesses, etc., are suddenly concerned that a weak-kneed GOP leader (who is their best friend) made a really stupid statement last week, made the same kind of statement 20 years ago, and didn't want his fraternity integrated 40 years ago. We know what the South was like 40 years ago. It appears that Lott has led his public life since those days as someone who believes in racial equality.

Now, he is being a whiner and threatening to quit the Senate if he is removed from leadership. What a weenie. We don't want him as leader, but we need him in the Senate. It is blackmail.

Perhaps the statements will blow over soon. He is certainly damaged goods, but the GOP may have no choice but to keep him. The RATS will benefit either way. If he stays in his position, he will continue to compromise and kiss their RAT posteriors. That is Trent.

The more ominous scenario is that the GOP does the right thing to force him out. Yes, I believe if he is forced out of leadership he will quit the Senate and a RAT governor will appoint a RAT to the Senate.

So here we have the reason for the assault. If Lott stays, the RATS have an issue to fire up their base and they have a weak Lott right where they want him. If Lott goes, the Senate is 50-49-1, with the 1 voting for their team.

But it won't stop there. I suspect that the RATS are confident that either Snow or Chaffee might then see an opportunity to jump. Either of them could become an Independent and vote with the RATS. All of the effort by the GOP to retake the Senate will be flushed down the toilet.

This really is an effort to undue an election. The RATS, not surprisingly, are even doing it in time of war while al-Qaeda plans another assault on our nation.

We may have little choice but to reluctantly support Lott. Let's see how it plays out through the Christmas season (not the "Holiday season"). If he survives for another week, he may ultimately keep his post.

The real conservatives of the party, and those who really know how to deal with RATS, better sit Lott down and tell him the facts of life. If he is to keep their support, he needs to throw down his pom-poms, get rid of his light loafers, and start acting like a man. We don't need a wimp when we are dealing with the RATS.

President Bush made some strong statements as he clearly needed to do. Now it is up to the rest of the party to start fighting back. It is time to be reciting the awful, hateful, racist comments said by the RATS. We really do have an opportunity to stick it in their faces if we have the gonads to do it. There is no White Caucus, but there is a racist Black Caucus. It is no time to sit on the sidelines and wave pom-poms. Or is it pom-pons?

Doug, crusher found the story on the conference call, and according to that story Lott wasn't even on the call! The hints about quitting the senate came from some unnamed sources who were supposedly Lott supporters...which could be people on FR threads the reporter happened to read, for all we know.

Although I am exasperated at Lott, I do not think it fair to tar him with this blackmail threat. His staff denied that he would ever consider letting a democrat governor choose Mississippi's senator.

The story is buried in that very long thread. I have flagged crusher to this one so that perhaps he can provide the information.

It's those FBI files (which Hillary keeps under her mattress-where no one will find them). I'm sure Trent caved because of the info therein. Unless you can come up with a better reason not to impeach a perjured testimony? "Dead On Arrival" is the way he put it. Why?

Think about what you just said, re>intelligence. Do you really believe that.

As far as answering to the people of Mississippi, yes that was certainly true ... until he became the leader and that makes the stakes and his responsibilities considerably higher.

I mean, the line about "all politics being local" is usually applicable. There was no fraud in Louisiana, we lost that because of a strictly local issue.

But again, when you are the leader of your party, that steps things up a notch, and Trent Lott is lacking there.

You want to really know why he's going to be out at leader over this? Because this is an opening for some folks in the Senate who've had their knives out for Trent for a while.

Because most of us who post here are interested in values and issues and what's right for America. I'd wager that there are more folks in Washington, both in the Senate and the House and both on our side and the other side, who are motivated by ego and power than by values and issues. And that more than anything else is why things never get done to our satisfaction.

if Ann said either Lott should stay or step down?

I didn't hear her say he should step down -- there was a lot of back and forth and talking over each other, and I missed the first bit of them (stupid clicker !) but her general attitude was "look, Lott's a doofus, but it was an old guy's 100th birthday and he was trying to say something nice/make toastmaster type "jokes" -- everyone (including Maxine) knows he's not a racist" she also REALLY hit on the fact that the Dems. have plenty of things in their background that is the same or worse (as did Sean) and that the blacks in congress actively discriminate (against whites) today

I think there is a good chance the Dems are overplaying their hand

You may be right -- evidentally the e-mail this morning on FOX & Friends was 80% "Please quit with the stupid Trent Lott stuff already -- we're sick of it !" They had a pile of e-mail printouts on the table that was a few inches high !

I did not hear all of the discussion, but Ann Coulter was definitely on the side of Trent Lott. Pat Buchanan as well put things in perspective. Sharpton was Sharpton.

MANY of you oppose Lott...

If I have, in any way, given you the impression that I am a part of that crowd then I appologize!

I have certianly taken exception to things he has done, such as his sorry performance in the impeachment episode, but I have NEVER opposed him, and I do not now!

Doug is EXACTLY right when he says that this is about undoing an election and they are using the ONLY means they have at their disposal to do so! The $%@@#$#$#$% MEDIA!

Where are Trent's FBI files now that they are needed?

The best outcome would be if W could send down the guys with the Presidential brass knuckles to illustrate that it's in his own best interests to quit his position, represent Mississippi alone and shut his fat mouth.

Since that ain't likely, can't one of you Photoshop gurus create some credible evidence of Lott cornholing one of his Ole Midss frat brothers? That would shut up Lott and immediately make him immune to further Democrat criticism.

You're right. It is not right to tar and feather him over something he does not deserve. As much as I dislike him, this is not the issue over which I want him gone, particularly if it is on the RATS' terms.

The "Lott bashers" on this forum are well entitled to their position. To attach their opposition to the current Democratic wedge ploy is unbecomming.

Lott's leadership position has long been in jepordy among the vast right wing conspiracy. His most recent misadventure is just another stepping stone along the legacy he has created for himself.

Lott's record as both a member and a leader of the senate shows he is neither a racist nor an able, conservative leader. While he has ably preformed his primary duty to his constituants, bringing home the bacon to Mississippi, his effectiveness ends at the lip of the pork barrel.

Lott need not resign and bend to the will of the collection of racist bent on crippling the Republican resurgence but rather be rejected by his peers for his lack of leadership

Republican senators with the most testosterone need to sit Lott down and have a good talk with him. They should say that he will be able to stay and they will support him, but it is time for him to be a strong leader. Do not get along with Daschle. Do not get along with Leahy. Do not get along with Satan's Daughter. We need to bury those bastards. If you display some strong leadership, you can stay.

100% correct. The RATS motive isn't about racial justice. It's about power. Always has been, always will be. They directly usurped the will of the American people back in 2000 when Jeffords jumped. You'd be a damn fool if you believed they aren't going to try this again.

It's time for all Republicans to take off the 'bring a new tone' blinders and beat the RATS at their own game. Period.

Doug, some on this forum speculate that the Democrats started this rucus so that the Republicans would be forced to keep Lott in a leadership position.

Do you think these testosterone laden folks are going to be able to mold the character with a political leadeship IQ of about 60?

I don't like Lott as Senate Leader, but we have to teach the Dems a lesson. For now, let Lott remain Senate Leader and give Jim Jeffords a Committee Chair if he changes back to a Republican. We have to do what is necessary to confirm conservative judges, pass permanent tax reductions, ban partial birth abortions, etc, etc.....

Doug, I am very encouraged by your post. You've been using your noodle and maybe some other folks will start using theirs as well.

POINT ONE: You don't have to like everybody on the Republican team. It is a team and it will win or lose as a team. You don't bench your most important player just because he's the world's biggest jerk.

POINT TWO: This is a fight where folks on the right are emotionally worked up and folks on the left are cool and collected and in full manipulation mode. Who benefits from this imbalance of emotion and political judgement?

POINT THREE: Lott's boss is the man who sits in the Oval Office. That man has very good judgement when it comes to picking people to do his bidding. If he thinks Lott can deliver for him that's good enough for me. Anybody here want to match their personnel management skills with GW? If so maybe they should run for President.

OK, so get mad, and then cool the f**k off and start fighting with your head and not your gut. If you don't use your heads then somebody who knows how to provoke your gut reaction will own you in a fight!
