Looks good. Thank god Martin Sheen isn't playing Lee. His portrayal of Lee in Gettysburg was downright bizarre.

Looks like the facial hair is better in this one too!!!

I agree; I love Robert Duvall as an actor. And after seeing Martin Sheen's anti-Americanism as the fake president on TV's "Left Wing", I couldn't stand to see him up there as Lee again.

For an alternative trailer link, go here. The Confederate glorifiers should love this movie because it covers the part of the war where things were going well for them. Bob Dylan wrote the theme song and recently recorded a music video with some members of his band in a Richmond Civil War cemetery. I'm anxious to see the movie and hear the song, but I don't think I'll make it to the high priced premiers.

It was a very good book. Don't know how the movie will be with Ted Turner mixed up in it...

Unlike others on this board I thought Sheen did a great job of playing Lee in Gettysburg. For those who have read General James "Pete" Longstreet's memoirs, Lee is portrayed very much as Longstreet remembered him during the Gettysburg Battle. This is not suprising given that Gettysburg seems to be very much based on Longstreet's book. ("From Manassas to Appamattox") This is not to say that I accept Longstreet as the definitive source, just that the movie sure seems too.

Given that Duvall is a much better actor than Sheen, I am sure he will do a fine job in this movie. Duvall out-acted Sheen in Apocalypse Now and I'm sure he will this time too. I loved the movie Gettysburg (which was also produced by Turner) and I have been waiting a long time for this movie. I'm glad to see that Jeff Daniels is reprising his role as Joshua Chamberlain because he should have won an Oscar for his protrayal of Chamberlain in Gettysburg. He was awesome. Tom Berringer also did a great job of protraying General Longstreet in Gettysburg, despite that horrible, goofy, fake beard they had him wear. I will miss Berringer in "Gods and Generals" since he chose not to be in this movie. I won't miss Sheen at all, given the quality of his replacement.

Every time "Gettysburg" is on TV, I MUST see the crucial moments on Little Round Top.

Gives me about the same buzz as seeing the shocked faces of the Japanese naval
aviators as they pan across their three burning aircraft carriers in the
movie "Midway".

I guess I go for those sort of crucial "reversal of fortune" moments in movies.

"What is the release date?"

February 21st, 2003, but that could change. It was originally scheduled to come out this fall.

I agree with you that the book was excellent. Turner was involved in Gettysburg, which was based on The Killer Angels. Gettysburg was outstanding, despite the bad makeup jobs. Senators Phil Gramm and Robert Byrd have cameo appearances in Gods and Generals.

Was at 138th Anniversary of Gettysburg, they were talking about the start of the filiming of G & G. The Movie is about Antiedam, Fredricksburg, and Chancellorsville, the guy playing Jackson is the same actor that played, Pickett, in Gettsyburg. By the way don't miss the 140th Anniversary of Gettysburg, that will probably bring 50,000 Reenactors to that town for Picketts Charge.

" By the way don't miss the 140th Anniversary of Gettysburg..."

I used to go to Gettysburg every year for their relic and book shows, but after Ken Burns' documentary on the war, the influx of people quadrupled and you could hardly drive through the city. As well, attendance at the shows increased so much that you could hardly make it through the rows of tables, or even get to the tables to see anything. I got tired of being stepped on, elbowed and shoved. Frankly, I prefer Gettysburg in the winter. There's hardly anybody there, and you have the battlefield practically to yourself.

A book has been written about the Alabama regiment that "almost" took Little Round Top.

Sorry, have forgotten the name of it.

Good guess, but the movie Gettysburg was based on Michael Shaara 's book The Killer Angels. Shaara borrowed form Longstreet's memoirs to create the book, however. You can buy it at Barnes and Noble: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?WRD=the+killer+angels&userid=5415NTBDZE

I think God took sides before the end of the war; beginning, I believe, July 3, 1863.

"Good guess, but the movie Gettysburg was based on Michael Shaara 's book The Killer Angels."

I knew that and I realized after I had posted that I had worded my comment poorly. I meant to say that it appeared Shaara had based much of the historical detail of his book on Longstreets memoirs and therefore that's what shows up in the movie. The movie is very faithful to Shaara's book to the point that much of the dialogue in the movie is taken verbatium from the book. (in turn, a lot of Longstreet's dialogue in the book is taken verbatium from Longstreet's memoirs) The movie avoids entirely the controversy that has raged for 150 years as to whether Longstreet was at fault for deliberately waiting too long to commence his attack on the Union's left flank on Day 2 of the battle.
