The republicans tried by all means to block the civil right movementBoth the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act were passed with tremendous Republican support, much moreso than the Democrats. And let's not forget Gore's filibuster.
It was June 1964, less than five months before the elder Gore was to face Tennessee voters. Southern Democrats, representing the powerful segregationist wing of the party, were in the midst of a 57-day filibuster to prevent the Senate from voting on the Civil Rights Act. Title I of the legislation established numerous voting rights for racial minorities. Other sections addressed equal employment opportunity, discrimination in public accommodations and segregation of public facilities, including schools. On June 10, 1964, Sen. Al Gore Sr., displaying a complete lack of political courage, resisted the pressure applied by President Johnson to vote to end the filibuster. He joined 19 other Southern Democratic senators and voted in favor of continuing to talk the civil rights bill to death. In all fairness, a number of conservative senators held the same position; however, 82 percent of Senate Republicans voted to end debate, thus freeing the legislation for an up-or-down vote later that month.

Entità specifica sulla cui identità tassonomica esistono opinioni divergenti, per il fatto che si conoscono due forme cromosomiche: una asiatica (2n= 42) ed una europeo-oceanica (2n= 38, in alcuni casi 40). Secondo taluni Autori si tratterebbe di due distinte specie, in quanto l’ibridazione produce spesso prole sterile. In questo caso, Rattus rattus sarebbe in realtà un complesso che racchiude più di un’entità specifica, vale a dire Rattus rattus (forma europeo-oceanica) e Rattus tanezumi (forma asiatica).
Questa specie si distingue da Rattus norvegicus per le minori dimensioni corporee, le orecchie più sviluppate ed il muso maggiormente pronunciato. Il cranio è riconoscibile facilmente per la morfologia. Un carattere diagnostico è costituito dall’assenza degli evidenti rilievi che, sui due lati, in Rattus norvegicus delimitano longitudinalmente la parte superiore della scatola cranica.
