FYI to anyone in the Washington D.C. area
Posted on 12/12/2002 11:46:48 AM PST by SoftballMominVA
If anyone sees a parade of emergency vehicles near the Capitol Building, a bomb threat was just called in to the Thurgood Marshall Judiciary Building(2:25 pm EST). It is next to Union Station. The building has been evacuated.
This building houses the Administrative Offices for all the U.S. Courts, plus offices for retired justices.

Hopefully this is just a false alarm.

FoxNews just showed the President landing at the White House...but no mention of this bomb threat.

Large, brand-new building. 2 blocks from the Capitol, just to the north of it. Right to the east of Union Station. Large, light-filled atrium front door.
Thanks for the heads up, Fred. I hope it's nothing.

What's going on there right now? (That is, anything of interest happening in the building that might have "attracted" this threat?)

Forgot to mention my source--my husband works for the Administrative Offices. He called me from the sidewalk.

No

The only real significance to the building is that it is the emergency meeting place for the Senate. But of course, they aren't in session. My husband said there was nothing big going on today, no one of extreme importance there that he knows of.

Or, to put on my Eeyore hat: "Maybe it's a diversion?"

I agree that nothing noteworthy today. I think there are some type of administrative hearings that occur in the building on occasion.
It hasn't made the AP wire or the washingtonpost.com news flash. So I'm thinking it's hopefully not a big thing.
But thank you very much for alerting us in the DC area. Appreciate it.

Thanks for the info. Probably just a disgruntled somebody or another. I worked for a company in NYC years ago where we had to evacuate about three times a week for bomb threats. There was never anything to be found, but trudging down all of those stairs was sure a nuisance. Sometimes we had to go just to the next elevator lobby, and sometimes we had to go all the way down. We always joked that it was our orporate exercise program.

He didn't say whiners.

Obviously, otherwise I would have said there's only so much of Fred Mertz to go around. :-)~

I may be wrong, but with the death of Byron "Whizzer" White last year, there are no living former Supreme Court Justices. This may be a first in US history, I'm not sure. I do know that this is the longest period of time since the 19th century that has gone between nominations. But no retired Justices. Combine that with five living ex-Presidents, and you have a strange situation.

Long time no see!
