A burglar decides to pass by the chimney... and remains wedged

Thursday December 12, 2002 - 0h54 GMT

SAN DIEGO (the United States), 11 déc (AFP) - a 19 year old young man, who wanted to burglarize offices with San Ysidro, close to San Diego (southern of California), chose to enter by the chimney where it was found wedged, the head in bottom, during more than five hours, one learned from police source.

"the young man plunged the head the first, before realizing that the chimney was stopped at the base by metal racks", towards 1HOO of the morning Tuesday, explained the sergeant Juan Gonzales.

Two of its accomplices, old of 16 and 17 years, have on their side forced the door of entry. Not finding money, they joined together pens and other office supplies. "When they were stopped, they had some 28 dollars of material on them", specified Mr. Gonzales.

"Apparently, they had shared the job: while one of them entered by the top, the two others were to attack by bottom. It is in any case what they said to us ", explained the police chief chargé d' affaires, Rodney Johnson, obviously perplexed.

Alerted by neighbors, the police force intervened little before five hours of the morning. The two teenagers were always inside the building, hopelessly trying to extract their friend from the conduit where it was captive.

The firemen then intervened and had to destroy partially bottom of the chimney for finally releasing the young man, around 6 hours. "They attacked three successive layers of bricks to leave it from there", specified Mr. Johnson.

Besides some scratches with the elbows, it left indemne the adventure.

The three robbers were accused for burgling, one specified of the same source.

Earlier in the morning, a spokesman of the firemen of San Diego had explained that the young man had found himself in the chimney after having fallen there by accident following one evening sprinkled on the roof.

Initially, the young man had advanced that it was on the roof with his friends "to admire the starry sky".

Nonsense! It should be clear to one and all that he was trying to block the entrance of "San Di Claus."
