Who's Pro-Life? Louisiana Race Showcases Confusion

National Catholic Register
Dec. 8-14, 2002

by JOSHUA MERCER
Register Correspondent

ABITA SPRINGS, La. - Although retired at age 70, Ed Jeanfreau is working harder than ever before. He was working to educate Catholics about the very different positions held by Louisiana's pro-abortion incumbent, Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu, and her pro-life Republican challenger, Suzie Terrell.

The two Catholic women were set to face off on Dec. 7 for the 100th seat in the U.S. Senate.

"This is one of the most important elections in our lifetime," said Jeanfreau, who directs pro-life activities for the Louisiana Knights of Columbus. "And we are doing everything we can to get the Catholic vote out."

Jeanfreau directed his son to create an online pro-life resource called cpforlife.org, distributed more than 12,000 pro-life lawn signs and delivered hundreds of speeches to local Knights of Columbus councils around every swamp in Louisiana.

In the weeks leading up to the election, Landrieu's support for the abortion agenda got the attention of influential Catholics.

Danny Loar, executive director of the Louisiana Catholic Conference, maintained that with control of the Senate in Republican hands, the only real issue in the race would be abortion.

"I think it's a critical election. Unfortunately, a lot of Catholics in southern Louisiana think Landrieu is pro-life," Loar said. "That is certainly not the case. Her voting record is certainly pro-abortion."

Loar said that in talking with people across the state, he discovered that thousands of Catholics maintained that Landrieu is pro-life, despite her long record in support of abortion.

He said he understands why so many pro-life Catholics are confused.

"We sent a questionnaire to the candidates on a variety of issues. And they both responded. Landrieu answered all the questions as if she is pro-life," he said.

The bishops' conference left each of Louisiana's seven dioceses to decide whether they want to publicize the questionnaires, and several opted against doing so.

With pro-life support divided, Loar expected a nail-biter on election night, similar to the race in 1996, which Landrieu won with less than half of 1% of the vote.

Clueless Voters? </p

Senator Landrieu supports the "Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women" (CEDAW). Despite its benign title, this bill is intended to impose radical feminism globally through the fascists UN.

Landieu has no honor..no integrity.

Her only goal is to be elected having no regard for the people as can be seen from her turncoat statements.

She is anti-catholic basis her support of abortion....a realm scum-hag of the first degree.

Landrieu SHOULD be spending her time shoring up the critical black vote...instead she is spending her time trying to convince pro-lifers she's one of them.

This is a classic case of utter disarray! Her campaign is in BIG trouble...disavowing her party, cuddling up to GWB, pretending to be righteous.

We are going to win!!!!

So let me get this straight. Landrieu has a pro-choice voting record. But when asked about her views on various abortion issues, she responded in the pro-life way?

Does anyone have her voting record, or a rating from a pro-life Congress watchin group so we can compare her voting to her survey results?

Go to http://www.nrlc.org for a look at Landrieu's voting record.

On the Catholic questionnaire, she claimed to support legislation to protect human life from the moment of conception, and to support the Hyde Amendment's restriction on tax money being used for abortions. In both cases, her voting record is completely the opposite.

She lied to the Catholics, hoping no one would find out before election day.

I have been waiting for a bomb to drop in this race here in the last few days, but I thought it would be by Landrieu against Terrell. If this story gets legs in Louisiana, Landrieu may lose by 8-10% instead of the 4-5% it looks to be now.

No, I don't know her voting record. But I did watch the debate between Susie and her with Russert. That is exactly how she answered the question--she said she personally does not condone abortion, but votes that way because most of the people in LA feel that way--which, again, is utter nonsense.

What has I been tryin to Tells ya?

This afternoon, results still show 54.57% of this strictly two-way race for Terrell, which thus is 45.43% for Landrieu. The shape of the curve over the last two weeks indicates this day, about this MINUTE, as a negative flux point for T, thus we expect slow inexorable increase for Terrell between now and Saturday, which means the 54.57 can be viewed as a floor for her, with some 3.3% of total vote represented by non-Blacks who could still switch to her, and about 0.3 by Blacks who could, thus in theory her top limit is some 58.2% and her floor scarcely below the 54.57 at all, say around 54.2...

Landrieu sounds just like Pelosi, who had the nerve to call herself a "conservative Catholic".

Have these women fooled themselves into actually believing these myths, or are they simply congenital liars?
