ALBANY -- Local taxes in New York are more than twice as high as the national average, and represent the state's biggest obstacle to economic growth, according to a report released Tuesday.

In addition, the report, from a business-backed think tank, claims that the answer is not more aid from the state but spending restraint by schools and local governments.

What!?!? High taxes causes the loss of jobs and economic growth? Say it ain't so. For my entire life I have heard the RATS says that higher taxes will cause economic growth.

As Rush Limbaugh always says, a nation can not tax itself into prosperity.

That applies to states as well.

All these state tax comparison tables you see in various magazine/newspapers are meaningless because they don't factor in local taxation for programs that some states pay for.

This article is correct, and New York is #1 in taxes.

If NC keeps up with their goal of being like Taxachusetts, then the smarter folks will high-tail it from here too!

No, I definitely meant NC.
We have a DemoRAT Governor named Mike "Taxes" Easley & a Dem-controlled state Senate.

However, the GOP just took the state House in the elections. :)

School spending per pupil and Democrat controlled cities burdened by huge union labor problems are problem number one. Problem number two is a Democrat Assembly and a moderate Governor. Problem 3 are the highest energy costs in the country. Problem 4 are Shumer and Hillary working for themselves instead of the state.

NYs problems were around long before Hillary! and Schumer were on the scene. Do not forget the horror brought on the state by the 12 year reign of Cuomo.
