90's ECONOMIC BOOM FUELED BY IMMIGRANTS, STUDY SUGGESTS
The Austin-American Statesman ^ | 2 December 2002 | D'Vera Cohn

Posted on 12/02/2002 8:34:08 AM PST by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

A study of census data concludes that recent immigrants were critical to the nation's economic growth in the past decade, accounting for half the new wage-earners who joined the labor force in those years. The effect was particularly large among men: Eight of 10 new male workers in the previous decade were immigrants who arrived during that time, according to the report by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University.

The Northeastern University report, scheduled for release this week, offers powerful evidence of the growing impact of immigrants in American society. Earlier data from the 2000 Census showed a record number of new arrivals during the 1990s that prevented population loss in some cities and rural areas. The newly analyzed work force numbers show that immigration also is redrawing the profile of the U.S. work force, in some cases transforming entire industries. More than 13 million legal and illegal immigrants came to the United States from 1990 to 2001, drawn by the healthy economy and family ties. The report said 8 million immigrants joined the labor force, which means they were either working or looking for work, over a period when the total number of new workers was 16 million.

Incredible data coming in, With 11/26/2002 article on front page of WSJ about businesses targeting Hispanics and now this...the nation is being transformed before our very eyes. The bottom line is: Hispanics WILL work and work hard. What about everyone else? Valid question.

The article reads like a slick PR campaign---for immigrants, whether legal or "undocumented." It uses a lot of weasel-words--most, many, some, few--rather than hard facts.

The report said 8 million immigrants joined the labor force, which means they were either working or looking for work,

So, how did they live while "looking for work"? Looking for and joining are not the same thing.

Sum said many of the new immigrant workers, possibly half, are here without legal papers, meaning the economy is dependent on people in a legal no man's land. [Also meaning they are here illegally.]

The answer to this problem is simple. This is not going to be a polite post and I have no intentions of apologizing for it.

STOP ABORTION AND YOU WON'T HAVE TO IMPORT OR DEPEND ON TRANSPLANTS TO FILL ALL JOB VACANCIES.

WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND> MAYBE ALL THE INTELLECTUALS OUT THERE CAN'T LOWER THEIR THOUGHT PROCESS THIS LOW.

IN THE LAST 30 YEARS ARE AMERICAN WOMEN, WIVES, DAUGHTERS, HAVE ABORTED ENOUGH BABIES TO POPULATE SOME COUNTRIES.

WAKE UP AMERICA. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IMMIGRANTS AND DO SOMETHING TO STOP IT.

Are you part of the solution or the problem?

I tried to say something along these lines on an earlier thread and am still getting flames.

A few of the many detailed studies by the Center for Immigration Studies:

Tired & Poor: Bankrupt Arguments for Mass, Unskilled Immigration

by Steven A. Camarota

National Review, September 3, 2001

We at the Center for Immigration Studies estimate that the average Mexican immigrant will use $55,200 more in public services during his lifetime than he pays in taxes.

The Impact of New Americans: A Review and Analysis of the National Research Council's The New Americans: Economic, Demographic, and Fiscal Effects of Immigration

In California and New Jersey, the average immigrant-headed household currently uses $3,463 and $1,484 more, respectively, in services provided by state and local government than it pays in taxes. This translates into an added tax burden of $1,178 imposed on each native household in California and $232 in New Jersey (Table 3 on page 7)

Immigration was responsible for 44 percent of the decline in relative wages (compared to other workers) for high school dropouts from 1980 to 1994.

Immigration from Mexico Study Examines Costs and Benefits for the United States by Steven A. Camarota

Center for Immigration Studies Paper No. 19

…reduction in wages for the unskilled has likely reduced prices for consumers by only an estimated .08 to .2 percent in the 1990s. The impact is so small because unskilled labor accounts for only a tiny fraction of total economic output.

You can't post this. People here on Free Republic are sure that nothing good comes from immigrants (well, after 1900 anyway); that all immigrants only come here for welfare; that they all speak Spanish and support "Aztlan;" and that they hate Republicans.

So re-check your data. Immigration can't possibly be good for America.

90'S ECONOMIC BOOM DESTROYED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, JSP1 SUGGESTS

The money was flowing like water, the $3 an hour crowd just sucked up the residuals/freebees until they were all gone.

Hard working and law abiding immigrants of all kinds have unquestionably helped fuel America for its entire history. I don't think that this should be used as a justification for not enforcing our immigration and labor laws however.

Hogwash.
The '90s hysteria was fueled by the overhyped high-tech bubble that burst.
Bringing in even more illegal immigrants is only going to drag us down further.
This so-called "study" is pure malarkey.

The first clue to this story is The Austin American Statesman. It's a socialist propaganda organ. If the facts did not meet their accepted worldview, they would simply make them up. Next week they'll say Bill Clinton fueled the 90's boom. After that, Unions. Consider the source here.

IN THE LAST 30 YEARS ARE AMERICAN WOMEN, WIVES, DAUGHTERS, HAVE ABORTED ENOUGH BABIES TO POPULATE SOME COUNTRIES.

There is too much invested in the "right" to an abortion for the practice to stopped or even curtailed. If women end up not having the "right" to abortion on demand, that would mean that they would start to lose the privillaged status that gives them rights at the expense of others who's rights are now being restricted and eliminated. It's the same double standard that almost guaratees them custody of the children they don't abort when she tires of the husband, knowing that the "family" court will give her most of his property and a large amount of his earnings.

Immigration fuels the bottom of the economic chain. It's how things work. The economic boom of the 90's was the doing of the computer guru's, Microsoft, Intel, IBM, MAC, etc. The fed only had to hang-on.

But, the feds being feds, put a wrench in the works through some really really stupid lawsuits aimed directly at the people who created the economic gains. In the mean time the borders were left open and the bottom fell out.

Thanks for the links. This immigration-as-the-holy-grail crap must be refuted whenever it appears.

Common sense MUST be re-introduced into this issue or as a society we're doomed.
