Belgium: AEL-leader Jahjah called for resistance
Gazet van Antwerpen ^ | December 2 2002

AEL-leader Dyab Abou Jahjah incited the riots in Antwerp on Tuesday, during the manifestation after the murder of a 27 year old Moroccan. "We will become the rulers... We shall show them who we are, even if we have to demolish everything", he shouted in Arabic. That became appearent from one of the police investigations. Financial investigators also searched houses in Antwerp and Charleroi on Sunday.

In Antwerp the company where Jahjah's brother is employed was also investigated. The investigators suspect that thru this Belgian-Lebanese company money was transferred to the AEL. According he lawyers of Jahjah this is not true. There were three transactions of more than 1,000 dollar, but that was after AEL became international news.

Sunday morning, the house of Kamal Awaly, the treasurer of AEL, was searched. Vlaams Blok leader Filip Dewinter claims Jahjah maintains a close contact to the Syrian embassy, which he visits regualiry. It is also connected to the financing of the AEL, according Dewinter.

In the report on the riots on Tuesday evening, the investigators show certain facts brought forward by well-informed sources. Then police no longer tried to stop the crowd to give the AEL leader Jahjah the chance to convince the rioters to calm down.

But instead of asking the crowd to calm down, he shouted the opposite in Arabic. Jahjah was heard shouting: "We will become the rulers. We are the strongest. We will show them who we are, even if we have to demolish everything. Do not listen to them. Offer resistance." Although suprising, this action was to be suspected.

In Dutch papers the AEL-leader said he would call for civil disobidience - like blocking highways and occupying government departments - if the ruling politicians would not follow his agenda. That agenda call for a better social-economical position for the Moroccans.

The AEL already organized a pro-Palestinian demonstration which turned violent:

The AEL become known after it's leader called openly to his follwers (mostly of North Africans) to stop integrating. He also announced his AEL would enter the policial stage.

His call to shadow police, to prove the Belgian police are racists, was denounced by the authorities. It is suspected the shadowing is a move to stop police from entering certain neighborhoods.

Also in Antwerp there is a seizable Jewish community, which was subjected to violence and firebombings of synagogues and schools. Last week another firebomb was thrown at a synagogue, damaging it.

Also Vlaam Blok, an anti-immigrant party, has a 33% following in Antwerp. This mostly thanks to the large number of immigrants in Antwerp (more than 25% of the population), but also to the large share of the crime.

In 1995 38% of the total crime in Antwerpen was committed by immigrants (38% of which was committed by Moroccans, 21.6% by Eastern Europeans, 12.2 Africans and 7% Turks).

When looking at street criminality, their share is even higher: burglary: 40%, theft with use of violence 60%, pickpocketing 40%, hit-and-run theft 98%, grand theft auto 46%.

The main reason for the acting of the ruling political parties is that they fear Vlaams Blok will become very big. After the earlier riots in Antwerp (the pro-Palestinian demonstraion which turned violent) the authorities refused to crack down on the AEL. These new riots are the result of the too liberal attitude.

"demolish everything" sure doesn't sound like civil disobedience. But then, we now know is can mean different things to different people, too.

It seems from their actions throughout the world, they prefer demolishing---destroying, blowing things up, murdering and killing. That describes the type of cultural climate they are wanting to create.

Short of a serious nuclear "event" to teach a serious lesson, if we want to stop this behavior, folks like this need to disappear. Time for some governmental wetwork.
