Was just channel surfing and caught Andy Rooney on a late nigth repeat of Larry King Weekend as he said that George Patton has little to do with the liberation of France and defeat of Nazi Germany!

He then went into a ramble about Omar Bradley being the commander of Third Army...

Gad, has Andy Rooney lost his mind? Or has he got the big "Alz" in spades? I know he has and has said in past commentaries that he did not like George Patton, but these comments are either a complete rewriting of history or just out right lies.

General Patton was the commander of Third Army and General Bradley was his boss as commander of 12th Army Group. BTW, if Georgie Patton had not pulled out of the line and turned 90 degrees North in December, 1944, we may still be fighting the Battle of the Bulge...

Rooney was a correspondent in World War Two and I am sure he did the job to the best of his ability, but to let his personal bias rewrite history, even in his aging mind, is an affront to any measure of the journalism and journalists he and his ilk hold so dear.

EVER wonder why they put such a buffoon on 60 Minutes?

He's their idea of a funny guy...

Too bad he's such a clueless buffoon...

Ignore him- the rest of us do, and the TV market-share continues to spiral down the toilet...

One day, he'll ask "ever wonder why nobody watches me???" And of course, there'll be no answer, because nobody will have heard him....

Kinda' like the riddle, if a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears, does it make a sound...?

In Nitwit Rooney's case, the answer is "no."

Andy Rooney sold his soul to liberalism in exchange for some feebleminded spittle he flings at us from a TV studio.

Bad bargain, Andy. Your spittle landed on the men who fought and died to keep your sorry backside free.

Not necessarily, Petuniasevan. Bernard Goldberg, when he wrote his first article criticizing liberal bias in media, got cold-shouldered and raked over the coals. He mentioned ONE note of support that he received--it was from Andy Rooney.

I think I was over in Manu'a, where I didn't have my large stash of vids, so I ended up watching tv for the first time in weeks, and I happened to catch this episode.

I don't recall him saying Omar Bradly was the CO of Third Army, he just said that Patton's influence, overall, was not that great, in the role that 3rd Army played in the defeat of Nazi Germany. Larry King then mentioned Omar Bradly, who was discussed as a likeable General.

I'm not sure that he wasn't too far from the mark, what with the combined combat arms of all concerned. Granted, the Battle of the Bulge would not have ended so nicely without Patton's armor nearby.

BUT IN THE OVERALL PICTURE, the Soviets had more to do with eliminating the German Army (thus allowing the liberation of France). The fact that Andy Rooney didn't mention this is why Andy is an aging commentator, not a distinguished historian.

Mickey Rooney's evil twin, just taller.

Yeah, I know. I admit that I don't know a lot about Rooney, but thought I'd point out at least one positive thing that I know about him.

The liberals must tear down every icon of our patriotic past in order to force feed us their new "third way" orthodoxy. Remember how we were told that President Reagan slept through his eight years in the White House? This is just more of the same. It gets traction only if we fail to crush it under the weight of historical facts and logical argument.

Illigitimi non carborundum.

If you haven't already, read Schwiezer's "Reagan's War." It details President Reagan's forty year fight against communism, from his days in Hollywood when he was under threat of death by Soviet backed thugs trying to take over the (surprise!) unions.

I watched him on Larry King. He's a Carter clone. He's been drinking Klinton Kool-Aid laced with LSD... totally delusional.

Rooney has had it in for Patton since that overblown "slapping incident."

I saw the the interview also.

Rooney was a corresepondent during WWII. He is entitled to an opinion.

He gave Patton credit for the Battle of the Bulge, but says he thinks he Patton was not that great of a general overall. Rooney has a much higher opinion of Omar Bradley.

I don't agree, but Rooney does know what he's talking about on this subject.

As liberals go, he's one of the more thoughtful ones.

I don't care for him and I rarely agree with him, but he does get a laugh out of me from time to time. He isn't dumb.

Thanks Pookie...you are right. In Stalingrad itself..Operation Uranus...over 300,000 German soldiers were killed or captured, followed up by another 100,000 in the Operation little and big Saturn...the extension of Uranus to capture/destroy all of the Nazi southern forces.

The drive to Moscow cost the Germans several hundred thousand troops. The defeat at Kursk, the destruction of Army Group Center in the spring of '44. The destruction of the new 6th Army in Romania...all of these added up to 6 million dead German soldiers. This not to mention the Serb/Greek contribution of 750,000 KIA/WIA Werhmacht casualties in 4 years of occupation. The Poles did their part too.

Over all, at the beachs of D-Day, 1 in 3 German soldiers were not even Axis...the Germans scoured their prisoner of war camps and pulled all those who were not Russians. They put them in the trenchs and told them that if they didn't fire, they'd be killed. An interesting account comes up of 3 koreans captured by US forces. These intrepid adventurers were in the Korean army when the Japanese annexed Korea. They surrendered to the Japanese. When in the 30's Japan was fighting with the Soviets, they were forced into the Japanese army...where they surrendered to the Soviets...who forced them to fight in Barbarosa...where they...you guessed it...surrendered to the Germans....to find themselves in US hands and be returned to Korea in time for the Korean War....got to love that.
