Zsa Zsa Gabor Said to Be in Coma

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was hospitalized Thursday after her vehicle struck a light pole, officials said. Her husband's spokesman said she was in a coma.

The accident happened early Wednesday afternoon, said Sgt. Bruce Thomas of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department. Gabor, 85, was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for treatment and remained hospitalized Thursday, Thomas said.

"Apparently a light pole was knocked down and her injuries were sufficient that she was transported ... and remains hospitalized," Thomas said.

The hospital had no patient listing for Gabor, hospital spokeswoman Leslie Porras said.

Gerd Birkmann, a spokesman for Gabor's husband, Frederic von Anhalt, said in Germany that Gabor had been taken by helicopter to a hospital, where she was on a respirator. Birkmann said von Anhalt told him that she fell into a coma after the accident.

"It's the first time I have heard him cry," Birkmann said by telephone.

Gabor's daughter, Francesca Hilton, refused to comment when contacted early Thursday by The Associated Press.

The glamorous, Hungarian-born actress, the middle of the celebrated Gabor sisters, is most famous for her eight marriages. Among her husbands were hotel millionaire Conrad Hilton and Oscar-winning actor George Sanders.

Among her more prominent films: John Huston's Toulouse-Lautrec biopic, "Moulin Rouge," 1952; "The Story of Three Loves," 1953; "The Girl in the Kremlin," 1957; and Orson Welles' classic "Touch of Evil," 1958.

In 1989, Gabor was sentenced to 72 hours in jail for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer. She also was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service at a women's shelter.

For a minute there I thought this was a headline from back when she slapped that police man. IMO she's been in a coma for, oh, say about 85 years.

Dahling, you must take back those mean things if she is on her deathbed. Granted, she had one talent and marketed it splendidly but this is no time to pile on. Now, if Streisand had hit a pole, I'd want to personally thank the pole...

I read a book about the Gabors once. As the book described, Zsa Zsa was the closest description I have ever read about to a manic depressive - and I am married to one - I should know.

And let us not forget that classic 1958 thriller, "Queen of Outer Space"!

How tragic especially around Thanksgiving. This is sad news. She is old and maybe should only have been riding in a limo. Why was she driving herself. How sad I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.
