Looking to buy good history books. Especially American history. Any suggestions? (Vanity, I suppose)

Alright, I've been meaning to buy a history book with detailed American history, but I'm leary of spending money on a Politically Correct piece of crud. So can you folks help me out, here?

I'd like A) A book which focuses specifically not only on the USA, but on the history that led up the founding of the United States, and B) A detailed look at world history (Being only one book, I can't imagine it'd be all that detailed). I'd also like C) A book detailing World War II.

Appreciate any and all help folks. Thanks.

"My God, what a place!"

Glad you liked it. We sell on Alibris also, it's a different clientele.

Remember, buy lots of books this Christmas.

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa
by Eugene B. Sledge

One of the finest books about WW 2 combat ever written. EB Sledge was a private in the Marine Corps and fought on Peleliu and Okinawa. You will love this book.

I recently heard a broadcast of Radio Liberty (www.radioliberty.com) that the 1911 (I think that is the correct year) publication of Encyclopedia Britannica is the best. Not sure why that year, something about after that, agendas and rewriting of history became more prevalent. According to the person being interviewed, this set is highly sought after by historians.

I have heard the same thing about Britannica although not sure of the year. It seems like 1907 but could be any year in that era. I definitely want older examples but they are not common.

Anyway my Britannica's date from the 50's on up to the 90's. I think the Internet basically killed bound encyclopedias although I still find them more convenient than turning on the computer logging on etc. In fact I think most people would find them more convenient but are unwilling to pay the exorbitant price which new ones cost, whenever they still made them.

I agree with someone else who said Britannica is the best, they really are. I think Comptons and Funk and Wagnalls are the worst, at least of the common ones.
