SADDAM Hussein brought war in Iraq closer last night after hints that UN weapons inspectors would be banned from searching his palaces.
Chief inspector Hans Blix said Iraqi officials told him entry into presidential sites was not the same thing as entry into factories.
But Mr Blix said bluntly: The Security Council authorises us to go anywhere, anytime and we intend to do so.
A UN resolution demands that the inspectors get full access and threatens dictator Saddam with serious consequences if he blocks them.
Dr Blix also poured scorn on Saddams insistence Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction.
He demanded proof that stockpiles were destroyed and accounts from chemical factories.
Saddam is believed to have arsenals of biological weapons beneath his huge palaces. He also uses bunkers beneath hospitals and schools.
But the UN team showed off equipment they claim will spot anything Saddam has.
It includes ground-penetrating radar that can uncover underground facilities and radiation detectors.
Saddams latest show of contempt came a day before the inspectors start work.
A British diplomat said: It looks like well go down a depressingly familiar route ending in military action.

Chris Hitchens believes there will not be a war because Saddam will be poofed before we can bomb him. There is a case to be made for the Bathists exiting Saddam and placing someone in his place and the propaganda that we will face if we go in and make the effort to exit the entire despotic system of the Bathists. There are layers to this complex situation that we aren't giving enough vetting to.

Actually I got an email from a pilot lurker, who was involved in Desert storm, that last night's moon was a great one for night raids.
The moon is at about half and came up late. In fact at 10 am this morning the moon was hanging up high in the western sky. It was really dark last night after the sun set.

Yep, a lot of people, including the mediots have not noticed the Dec 8 date and its significance as you posted.
From what I've seen here and other places, they already have a list of quite a few installations, factories, etc. If those don't make it on the Dec. 8 list, it's gonna get exciting in Baghdad the morning of the 9th.
If they fail to comply, I don't think that GW and Tony will wait until the morning of the 9th. Air attacks will start about one hour after dark. 58 minutes after most of their radar is taken off the desert.
That is why I'm leaning to the 8th. If not the 9th is fine.

It would be a great Thankgiving Present if some Iraqi whacks Saddam and drains his brain pan out on one of his expensive Arabian carpets on Thanksgiving!

I can't remember what I had for breakfast, and you ask me about something that happened about 12 years ago.
Actually, I think that they had to wait for the moon and for our spec op guys to get boots on their soil to map out and target the targets. Then it came together.
The UN was trying to stall, and Storming Norman refused as his people were ready to go. When your warriors are ready, you let them go if the plan is ready and the supplies can be maintained.

When Saddam said Iraq was "clean" that was a definite red flag, it was an in your face insinuation that the inspectors would not find anything, (because everything has been hidden).
It's kind of like a killer who thinks he has left no trace.
If he thinks the inspectors aren't going to the palaces he's nuts, I know, that's repetitive. But, we will get into those palaces and he can let the men in blue do it or the men in green. Personally, I prefer the latter.

December 8th is the deadline for Saddam to turn in his final accounting of any and all WMDs. Put my bet down for 2 JAN 2003, the first new moon after the dealine.

The only question is: when he says "yes, we have no bananas," will we ask "is that your final answer" before we bomb him into oblivion.

No that would mean the people behind these "inspections" were serious about the job! That they really meant buisness!
