Very interesting 100 years
The year is 1902, one hundred years ago ...Here are some U.S. statistics for 1902:
- The average life expectancy in the US was forty-seven (47).
- Only 14 Percent of the homes in the US had a bathtub.
- There was no birth control
- Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.
- There were only 8,000 cars in the US and only 144 miles of paved roads.
- The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
- Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.
- The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower in Paris,France.
- The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour.
- The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
- A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
- More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home.
- Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."
- Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.
- Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
- Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the country for any reason.
- The five leading causes of death in the US were:
- 1. Pneumonia and influenza
- 2. Tuberculosis
- 3. Diarrhea
- 4. Heart disease
- 5. Stroke
- The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.
- The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was 30.
- Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented.
- There were no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
- One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
- Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and the bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."
- Eighteen percent of households in the US had at least one full-time servant or domestic.
- There were only 230 reported murders in the entire US.
....What a difference a century makes.

We marvel at *what* they read. i.e. Last of the Mohicans was a "Best Seller", sorry I don't have the exact sales #'s, but it was something like 90% of the households bought it and read it! Latin and Greek were what was taught and read and *memorized*. By today's standards your *un*-"Literate" grandparents were PhD level. AND the necessity for common sense for survival, much less prosperity meant that most people could *think*. Not like the "sheeple" of today! Bless You, too!

Diarrhea was fatal? Cholera.

Just think, in another 100 years THIS will be the good old days.Yep! That's probably how they'll think of it
To: Texasforever
I can see cholera, and diarrhea is a huge part/symptom of it. I can't see how diarrhea by itself was fatal. But I could be wrong.

diarrhea is a huge part/symptom of it. I can't see how diarrhea by itself was fatal. But I could be wrong. Diarrhea in infants is very dangerous even today. Infant mortality in those days was also very high and probably de-hydration from uncontrolled diarrhea was a significant contributor.

Is this serious? Diarrhea was fatal? Was and still is
Diarrhea causes the rapid loss of body fluids
Unchecked death can occur in three days
(we don't see it here in America that much anymore but it is still prevalent in other countries around the world)

One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Today it's about two in ten, so that's one area where we have apparently gone backwards.
Thank your NEA, kids.

Thank your NEA, kids. While I agree with you about the NEA there is NO excuse for kids today not knowing how to read.

Diarrhea brings on dehydration, and can be fatal especially to small children.

I can even go back to just 1977:
Minimum wage was $2.35 per hour while bracket creep took more in taxes if you worked 45 hours a week (with 5 overtime hours) than 38 hours a week. Everyone I knew that worked in college, like me, dared not work more than 38 hours.
Gasoline was about 70 cents per gallon.
A medium Supreme pizza from Pizza Hut (where I worked and delivered) was about $13..it's about $13 today.
A six pack of Busch beer was $3.25 or 12 oz. cans. It was $3.50 for a six pack of 16 oz. cans. I can buy a 12-pack of 12 oz. cans of Busch today for $6.49 (yes, pizza and beer - it was college)!
Of course many things like cars, houses, concert tickets, etc. have gone up more, but the average commodity has not! And the quality is much better today.
Oh what a difference just 25 years make!
