I can see cholera, and diarrhea is a huge part/symptom of it. I can't see how diarrhea by itself was fatal. But I could be wrong.

Diarrhea in infants is very dangerous even today. Infant mortality in those days was also very high and probably de-hydration from uncontrolled diarrhea was a significant contributor.
