Bush twins turning 21 today

President's daughters are marking the occasion in Texas

11/25/2002

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush's twin daughters, who have had brushes with the law for underage drinking, turn 21 on Monday, marking their birthday in Texas and looking to stay clear of the spotlight.

Both Barbara Bush, who attends Yale University, and Jenna, a student at the University of Texas at Austin, were in their home state in advance of a Thanksgiving family celebration. The president and first lady planned to celebrate the twins' birthdays over the holiday weekend, the White House said.

Laura Bush was returning to Texas on Monday and heading to the family ranch in Crawford on Tuesday. The president is to follow on Wednesday.

The White House is fiercely protective of the twins' privacy, and officials refused to provide details about the birthday plans.

Barbara and Jenna Bush have drawn unwelcome headlines over the last few years for alcohol-related episodes.

In May 2001, police in Austin cited both of them for violating state alcoholic beverage laws.

Police accused Barbara Bush of being a minor in possession of alcohol and Jenna Bush of misrepresenting her age in trying to use a fake ID to buy alcohol.

Jenna Bush was accused of ordering a margarita and was asked to produce identification proving she was 21. She showed a valid driver's license belonging to someone else, police said. She was not served.

The charges were dismissed after the twins, 19 at the time, performed community service, attended alcohol awareness classes and paid $100 in fines.

The month before that incident, Jenna Bush had pleaded no contest to charges of underage drinking. She was ordered to take counseling and perform community service. A judge fined her $500 and suspended her license.

Last summer, Jenna Bush reportedly tried to persuade a bartender to sell her a drink, but the bartender asked her to leave after consulting with the Secret Service agents who protect her.

Excuse me, but Chelsea was drinking underage in Aspen, Colorado, and the story got NO coverage.

Al Gore's son was cited for both underage drinking, reckless driving, and DUI. Seen many stories about that?

I am going to keep you in mind, and when the next story about the twins appears, which has NOTHING to do with their drinking but mentions it anyway, I trust you will be prepared to eat crow.

Personally, I don't care to dwell on Chelsea. I most heartily wish she would be allowed to have a private life, sparing us the fawning coverage of the media. I do care that the press maliciously targets the twins at every opportunity.

Glad they're 21. Now we can dispense with this nonsense.

('Til they get caught with drugs anyway.)

Born late yesterday evening, the twins, a boy and a girl, will be named Prince Philip George in honor of the grandfathers, and Princess Elizabeth Barbara in honor of the grandmothers.

Wouldn't Phillip and Elizabeth be the Great Grandparents? Charles and Diana would be the Grandparents on the Royal side.

Yes, MM. Thanks. I think that the Secret Service guy whisked her away if I recall correctly.

And as I said in my post #11, this article's headline versus what the write about in this story is blatantly biased and hypocritical, imho....

Yes, you are correct. I could say that I was making allowances for the Charles/Diana scandals, but the truth is that I wrote this before I had had enough coffee. LOL!

Good catch!

I'm not a Bushbot, so I'll say it. Even in humor, I think it's inappropriate to say the girls might do drugs. There has never been a suggestion of that.

One can never have too much coffee. I think your names sounded better than anything I could think of using Charles and Diana anyway ;-)

Princess Elizabeth Barbara

Fabulous parody, Miss M. Only one picayune beef to note: the princess would have to be named "Diana Laura" in honor of her grandmothers, not great-grandmothers. Cheers!

where's Chelsea?

Who cares? As long as she - and her "parents" - are out the picture - figuratively and literally - she can stay wherever the heck she wants!

BTW, now that the President's daughters are "legal", does that mean we can comment on how beautiful they are, without anyone thinking we're perverted old f*rts?

So being of legal drinking age is what keeps Chelsea's overindulgence out of the news? What's the reason for the cover-up of the 19-year-old Albert Gore III's latest DUI arrest?

Albert Gore III, the 19-year-old son of former Vice President Al Gore, was arrested near the Pentagon last week by U.S. military police from Fort Myer and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, and possession of alcohol by a minor.

Jano Cabrera, spokesman for the former vice president, confirmed yesterday that the younger Gore was "pulled over for a DWI" during the early-morning hours of Sept. 5. The arrest was made outside of the base, which is near the Pentagon.

"The family is relieved that no one was hurt," Mr. Cabrera told Inside the Beltway. "Beyond that, they are dealing with this privately as a family."

Mr. Cabrera stressed that Mr. Gore was alone in the car and was not speeding. Ned Christensen, the spokesman for Fort Myer, said the case has been turned over to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. A federal court appearance is pending.

This is the younger Gore's second brush with the law in as many years. He was arrested on Aug. 12, 2000, by the North Carolina Highway Patrol when clocked driving 97 mph in a 55 mph zone. Under an agreement with prosecutors, a reckless-driving charge was dropped, he was fined $125 for speeding and his driving privileges were temporarily revoked.

Washington Times (Sept. 13, 2002).

What are you talking about "Cover-up"??? That was all over the news...Or at least as much as a non-story like that deserved. Or do you want to hear more about Algorbatross??

Give it a rest...The Bush Twins brought this all on by themselves. There is no bias here, only conservative chicken littles who give us all a bad name with the constant whining when no wrong has been done.

News of 19-year-old Albert Gore III's Sept. 5 drunk driving arrest wasn't reported for a full eight days - until a political gossip column in the Washington Times broke the news blockade yesterday.

The media cover-up of Gore Jr.'s latest brush with the law stands in marked contrast to alcohol-related offenses involving the Bush family, stories the press has repeatedly rushed into print over the last two years.

As of Saturday morning, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Associated Press and most other big media outlets had declined to cover Gore Jr.'s alcohol-fueled antics, which came to an abrupt halt when he was pulled over by military police just outside the Pentagon.

But after Gore spokesman Jano Cabrera confirmed the arrest to the Times "Inside the Beltway" column, the paper went public with the news on Friday. ...

No offense to you personally but you're citing NewsMax.com????????

I trust them even less than major liberal newspapers. If that is possible.

Regardless...The media, liberal or not, LOVE a juicy story. And children + alcohol = Juicy!!

Just because someone does a better job of covering-up thier childrens discresions, that doesn't mean the people who didn't know of said discresions are out to get us conservatives.

Like I said...Crying wolf is an conservative embarrassment I see all too often on Free Republic.

The notion of under-21 as being "underage" with respect to drinking is absurd. Wasn't John Lindh under 21 when he joined the Taliban? Can't you be executed at age 18 because you are considered old enough to reason right vs. wrong? Can't you handle a semi-truck going 65 on a highway?

So what on earth is the big deal about sipping a damn beer?
