We have an 18 year-old daughter who wants to get her tongue pierced. We have been adamantly against any piercings for our son, and any that go beyond regular ear piercing for our daughter. We have, essentially forbidden this as well as tatooing. We feel it is a passing phase with more permanent repercussions.
Today my daughter plead her case for having it done, saying it is something she wants and can do with or without our permission now that she is 18.
She is a college freshman and is struggling with her 'identity' as such, and I think she thinks this is going to make her feel more grown-up and independent.
I'm almost to the point of telling her to do what she wants, but I know her father will have a fit and then we'll all have to live with the fall-out.
I have always sweated everything, large and small. These days, I only want to sweat the large stuff. My question is, "Is acquiescing on the tongue piercing large or small stuff?"
What if he IS the best candidate?
Ok... The facts (according to you) are:
I've always maintained that the skank-ho has been underappreciated by society at large. Just wish there were more when I was 18 - actually I had my fill :O
and...
Maybe you know of a bunch of decent girls with toungs and their "man-in-the-boat" pierced, but I sure don't.
That says a lot about you. Is your tongue pierced, by the way?
Nastify her body? That's according to you. Piercings are not permanent, and there is nothing "nasty" about them. I bet I could critize the hell out of the way you dress and make the same statement. I mean, if you wore that shirt on those pants, then "obviously" it is a clue enough that she you define herself yourself by what other's think.
Let's not turn FR into DU. Where are these numbers coming from? Are you pulling them out of your ass, or are you going point us to a study that documents this?
So if my percentage is right, a betting man would have to take the 80% bet that she is destined to be a skank.
If its right. Sure. But is it right? Let's not get into hypotheticals here.
Tattoos (or, to use the correct term, mutilations) are okay for old-style sailors, criminals, and other low-life types.
IMHO, and don't try arguing this with me, 'cuz I'm wearing my suit.
Skanky?? Oh please.......
Very, Very nice!
Aye. An' none o' yer transition state theory would do ye any good then! Two body collisions indeed! (grin)
In all seriousness, see if you can't borrow a copy of How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe by Tom Cahill. I'm not Irish, my father's family came from Scotland, but it was a fascinating read.
Do you, or your friend, mean that they can actually sustain an intelligent conversation for 15 minutes? Wow, that must be a record for that type...
ROFL!
There was that part, in case you missed it. That's about 2,500 years in the past, and I would think that Russian culture would have advanced some by now.
I stand by my opinion: That unless the person is Maori or something, if the person has so little self respect that they would willingly be mutilated (ear piercings on women are barely acceptable to me) then I wouldn't be too confident in them having a great deal of respect for others or others' property.

So you're saying that had you lived in the 5th century you're opinion would be different?
The big thing at our local H.S. (I hear) is girls who compete to see who can give the most BJ's during the school day.
My have thins have changed. As far as my advice, I'd say NO.
Nope. It would be a much rarer opinion then as opposed to now, however. I'd still have thought those who choose to be mutilated as a little touched in the head.
But, please, go ahead if it floats your boat. I have no desire to ban the practice of tattooing or piercing for those over the age of consent. Y'all are just going to have to face the consequences of the message your "enhanced" bodies are screaming to the world.
