Vanity- Tongue piercing

Posted on 11/24/2002 5:07:38 PM PST by Trust but Verify

We have an 18 year-old daughter who wants to get her tongue pierced. We have been adamantly against any piercings for our son, and any that go beyond regular ear piercing for our daughter. We have, essentially forbidden this as well as tatooing. We feel it is a passing phase with more permanent repercussions.

Today my daughter plead her case for having it done, saying it is something she wants and can do with or without our permission now that she is 18.

She is a college freshman and is struggling with her 'identity' as such, and I think she thinks this is going to make her feel more grown-up and independent.

I'm almost to the point of telling her to do what she wants, but I know her father will have a fit and then we'll all have to live with the fall-out.

I have always sweated everything, large and small. These days, I only want to sweat the large stuff. My question is, "Is acquiescing on the tongue piercing large or small stuff?"

My brother and sister-in-law had the same problem with a son who wouldn't work or go to school, yet wanted to use their hopme as a party base. They paid one month's rent at a motel for him, moved his belongings there, and told him he was on his own. Admitedly, even this was generous, but they didn't have the heart to put him on the street.

He immediately found a burger flipping job, and was able to find a cheaper place to live. He has now has re-enrolled in college, since he hates working so hard for low pay. Since he's been cut off, he could get good financial aid, and manage on his humble jobs.

After my son turned 18, he went and got his tongue pierced thinking we were going to flip our lids. We simply shrugged our shoulders and said, "Well, we would have advised against it, but you're an adult now. You have to make the decisions and live with consequences." He took the stud out after about 8 months, and the hole and grown closed. (Thank God he wasn't one of those who 'clicked' the stud against his teeth all the time. They can end up with cracked teeth that way.)

If husbands and wives remain UNITED and agree not to pay for wacky lifestyles, most kids will reconsider. Some kids under the influence of drugs and alcohol have to learn the hard way. My heart goes out to those parents in Pennsylvania whose college kids made the porn flick at Indiana U. When those kids eventually mature, they may regret seeing themselves forever and ever in group oral sex on the internet.

Let me set her up with the 19-year-old who works at my town's CVS drugstore. He has scarlet hair and fourteen (14) different piercings in just his face alone. You should immediately contact the store's manager, as well as CVS' parent company to complain. Mobilize like-minded friend until this little SOB is fired. Until businesses refuse hire young people who insist on such a revolting appearance, we cannot make headway in reversing this insipid trend.

What if he IS the best candidate?

I'm just stating the facts as they are.

Ok... The facts (according to you) are:

I've always maintained that the skank-ho has been underappreciated by society at large. Just wish there were more when I was 18 - actually I had my fill :O

and...

Maybe you know of a bunch of decent girls with toungs and their "man-in-the-boat" pierced, but I sure don't.

That says a lot about you. Is your tongue pierced, by the way?

The mere fact that this girl is telling the pushover mother that she wants to nastify her body is clue enough that she defines herself by what other's think.

Nastify her body? That's according to you. Piercings are not permanent, and there is nothing "nasty" about them. I bet I could critize the hell out of the way you dress and make the same statement. I mean, if you wore that shirt on those pants, then "obviously" it is a clue enough that she you define herself yourself by what other's think.

Is she a skank ho for wanting a tongue stud? Well, by percentages, I'd guess that 80% of the ones who have them suffer from moral terpitude, as opposed to the other 20% who must be pushing the artistic/creative envelope somehow.

Let's not turn FR into DU. Where are these numbers coming from? Are you pulling them out of your ass, or are you going point us to a study that documents this?

So if my percentage is right, a betting man would have to take the 80% bet that she is destined to be a skank.

If its right. Sure. But is it right? Let's not get into hypotheticals here.

Its okay to get a tatoo if you're in the Navy

Tattoos (or, to use the correct term, mutilations) are okay for old-style sailors, criminals, and other low-life types.

IMHO, and don't try arguing this with me, 'cuz I'm wearing my suit.

I also know enough that if I were there in person, I'd probably have to back this up with a good fight ;)

Aye. An' none o' yer transition state theory would do ye any good then! Two body collisions indeed! (grin)

In all seriousness, see if you can't borrow a copy of How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland's Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe by Tom Cahill. I'm not Irish, my father's family came from Scotland, but it was a fascinating read.

"Not really," he said. "Just talk to them for 15 minutes, you'll want nothing to do with them..."

Do you, or your friend, mean that they can actually sustain an intelligent conversation for 15 minutes? Wow, that must be a record for that type...

If she's performing cunnilingus on guys, she's got more problems than a mere tongue piercing can ever hope to solve.

ROFL!

There was that part, in case you missed it. That's about 2,500 years in the past, and I would think that Russian culture would have advanced some by now.

I stand by my opinion: That unless the person is Maori or something, if the person has so little self respect that they would willingly be mutilated (ear piercings on women are barely acceptable to me) then I wouldn't be too confident in them having a great deal of respect for others or others' property.

I think that's the best way to handle it. Just roll your eyes and sigh...as if their "unique" form of self-expression was fully expected, and no surprised at all. I bet if you'd made a big stink over it, he'd still be wearing it today.

So you're saying that had you lived in the 5th century you're opinion would be different?

women can use them to give greater pleasure during fellatio.

The big thing at our local H.S. (I hear) is girls who compete to see who can give the most BJ's during the school day.

My have thins have changed. As far as my advice, I'd say NO.

Nope. It would be a much rarer opinion then as opposed to now, however. I'd still have thought those who choose to be mutilated as a little touched in the head.

But, please, go ahead if it floats your boat. I have no desire to ban the practice of tattooing or piercing for those over the age of consent. Y'all are just going to have to face the consequences of the message your "enhanced" bodies are screaming to the world.
