Riots rage on as Miss World contestants flee Nigeria (Muslin, Christian Street War)

Riots raged on in the northern Nigerian city Kaduna after violence there forced beauty pageant organisers to abandon plans to stage Miss World in Nigeria.

Fighting which began as protest by Muslim youths against a newspaper article on the pageant has now degenerated into a bloody street war between Muslims and Christians, witnesses say.

An AFP journalist was forced to join around a 1,000 refugees hiding in the Kronenbourg brewery in the south of the city near the main road to Abuja, protected by troops and an armoured car.

"We had to run for our lives. They came to my house in two cars and tried to burn it. We really don't know what is happening," 20-year-old Julie Adabo told AFP.

Another woman said that a gang came to kill her after burning her home and only let her live when she lied and claimed to be a Muslim. One man said he had seen his brother cut down before him.

As she spoke, gunfire could be heard from the Trikania district around the plant and several buildings could be seen in flames.

Rioting in Kaduna on Thursday claimed at least 100 lives. Many more are since thought to have perished.

"Fighting continued until 11.30 pm (2230) GMT in this area. It started again at 6.30 am. We hear gunfire permanently," said the plant's French manager Regis Bouffartigue.

"The soldiers shoot and the demonstrators return fire. According to the soldiers, the demonstrators even have AK47s (assault rifles)," he said.

Miss World's organisers announced early Saturday that they would quit Nigeria and seek to hold the December 7 ceremony, which was set for the Nigerian capital Abuja, in London instead.

Trouble erupted in Kaduna on Wednesday when Muslim youths, incensed by an article on the pageant, burned down a local newspaper office.

On Thursday the fighting became more general, as rival Muslim and Christian groups roamed the religiously mixed city, burning homes and murdering in the street.

Troops and police responded with lethal force, and by Friday morning the Red Cross was already reporting a conservative estimate of 100 dead. That figure must now be much higher.

Red Cross spokesman Patrick Bawa said Friday that as the fighting had spread from the mainly Muslim north of the city to the mixed, poorer south, it became impossible to track casualties.

Similar clashes that broke out in 2000 claimed at least 2,000 lives.

Hmmmm. I propose we create a new All Female Airborne Division. Teach 'em to shoot and throw grenades and how to jump from a static line. The uniform would be Weapon, Helmet, Boots and Bikini- (thong bottom). That would surely get 'em riled up. They might even run in fear. We'd drop the 82d in right behind them of course.

It's always best to date/marry someone within your own religion. Politics, race, economic status are earthly, temporary designations. Who a person chooses to place their faith and eternal destination in, is a spiritual, eternal choice. Don't intermarry with non-believers, be equally yoked within your faith.

Having said that, a recent article I read stated that most Christians don't see any problem marrying non-believers... it makes you wonder just how truly devoted to being a Christian they are. If you claim to be a Christian but never practice the tenets and believe that the tenets are wrong... then, you're like, Clinton. I think Clintonism has helped each person see themselves/America as we are. Our words don't mean anything because everybody interprets words, actions and laws as they see right. In essence, morality and laws are subjective to each man's interpretation. Faithfulness is claimed readily, but seldom found to be authentic. Sinning/cheating/stealing is only bad if you're caught. Those who adhere steadfastly to the Bible's truths have the wrong "ideology", and are called bigots and uneducated. .

In a given society, a balanced number of religious leaders and devotees is necessary to promote morality. When ethics degenerate, more are needed; when a people are moral, religion falls out of favor.

If the balance falls out of kilter, so does the society.

I would say the West needs more religion and the Islamic world need less. It seems we are about to witness a naturally equalizing exchange.

I'll simply say that I am Christian.

I feel that the mandatory attendance of Church proceedings, while they make one feel better about religion, is not a substitute for walking the walk, so to speak... So, while I don't attend Church with any regularity... My ex-wife, who attends church religiously (excuse the pun), told me I was the "most Christian" man she had ever met... To say the least, I was surprised, as she is Catholic...

Let's face it- too many people do the "shout on Sunday, doubt on Monday" approach to religion. I have seen several times, where these so-called "Christian" people sit in Church, say the right things at all the right times, tithe, etc... Then, when they're leaving, give someone "the bird" in the parking lot, as everyone is trying to leave after services.... :(

But the thing is, being a Muslim and NOT condemning such violence as has been occurring over the last 25 years by fellow Muslims... says to me that there is a tacit approval of such actions...

This worries me... and I cannot, in good conscience, associate with people who condone overt murder in the name of a so-called religion, any more than I would allow myself to associate with the murderers, themselves.... :(
