New Motto For Virginia
Vanity | 11/20/2002 | BSunday

Posted on 11/20/2002 6:05:30 AM PST by BSunday

Inspired by another thread about the Massachusetts state motto, I think it is time for Virginia to dump her duplicity. We have 2 mottos ("The Old Dominion" and "Mother of Presidents") which we should whittle down to one so visiting Floridians will not be confused. So how about it ? Let's have some suggestions. Winner will be announced whenever this thread dies.

The Springfield interchange is the most major thing about Virginia

The mother of all interchanges ?

Actually, the motto was there before Booth.

Best state motto: "With God all things are possible." (Ohio, my home state. Woo-hoo!)

Worst state motto: "Womanly words, manly deeds." (MARYland. Now, that's wussy state motto!)

By the way, Ohio has had 8 presidents--all of them Republican! I have a feeling that another Ohio Republican (Ken Blackwell) will be the 45th President.

No. Washington state is the worst: "By and by"

(That's the old fashioned way of saying "Oh well, whatever, nevermind")

Still better than Maryland's "Please Drive Gently". That one always cracks me up.

Are you saying that's ALREADY the motto???

Yeah. Like it's been pointed out. That's been the motto probably since the time of the Revolution. Not sure exactly when it was officially adopted.

That said, I can get into this discussion if we want to talk "nicknames."

"Virginia’s motto, Sic Semper Tyrannis (Latin for "Thus Always to Tyrants"), appears on the Seal of the Commonwealth, as well as the State Flag."

This is correct and shall it ever be!

The Old Dominion and Mother of Presidents are NOT Virginia's "motto." They are nicknames given to the state.

Maybe your motto should be "sic semper picky no-humor having superior sounding looking down on you nit-pickers"

Sorry to rain on your parade No you're not.

How about the Magnet of Idiot Drivers

It could be worse. Could be "Manly cars, womanly drivers."

Maybe you should get a dictionary and learn the definition of "motto" and "nickname."

I said in a post above, I could get into the "new nickname" concept, even to poke a little fun.

Lighten up yourself.

Okay everyone, since I started this thing, I guess I have to clarify something. Earlier I was not paying attention too closely while composing my original post. Therefore, I will say that state motto or nicknames are both fair game, since technically they are different things. Nicknames are what is preferred but feel free also to change our motto too. (At least from latin to some type of American equivalent, like from sic semper tyrannus to "we will lay the smackdown on democrats"

How about "More cops per capita than any other state" or "Home of the speeding ticket". LOL
