[history]
Gun enthusiasts with a permit to carry a concealed weapon want to be allowed to carry their firearms into family restaurants, bars and other places that sell alcoholic beverages as long as they aren't drinking.
They also want the legislature to remove the prohibition that keeps them from carrying a handgun on school grounds and in public parks.

Require people teaching firearms courses to be certified by the commissioner of the state Department of Commerce and Insurance instead of the state Department of Safety. This is the only provision I'm not sure if good or bad. It needs to be run by a few instructors of comment, they would know which is in theirs and OUR best interest. The rest I back whole heartedly.

''Pro-gun does not mean you are pro-America,'' she said, adding that Second Amendment rights were being misconstrued. She said the purpose of the amendment was to allow the militia in Revolutionary War times to keep guns in their homes. It was not about ''everybody protecting themselves in their house".
I hope she doesn't expect me to wait for the police to show up to protect me. Around here the responce time could be up to an hour, depending where the patrol car is. Just hand me the 12-gauge and step aside.

Bump from a TN carry permit holder!! The main place I want to be able to carry is into convenience stores that sell alcohol. Several times, I've 'bitten the bullet' and went ahead and carried my pistol in such a store because there were some rough looking people there. I want to be able to carry my gun into and out of a place like that. It will also be nice to carry into a resteraunt, not for what might happen IN the resteraunt, but what might happen in the parking lot on the way in or out.

Ben West(D) is more conservative than many Republicans. We have been working on him to switch for years. At the state level, I would swap two RINOs for one true conservative Democrat.

Ben West(D) is more conservative than many Republicans.Agreed. People in other parts of the country wonder why the Democratic party is so strong in the south. Ben West is a good example. The big question is, "Why are they still Democrats?"
Ben West is a Democrat in the Ronald Reagan tradition. When asked why he left the Democratic party, Reagan replied, "I did not, they left me."

I have just recently gotten my CCW hear in TN myself. I'm afraid you may not be aware of some of the changes to TN CCW law. When I went throught the course, they told us that the law had been changed, and that one could now carry legally into an establishment that sold alcohol, such as a convenience store, etc. However, you still cannot carry into an establishment that serves liquor by the drink (as in a family restaurant). FYI

Can we in Texas please borrow Mr. West for a while? Yeah, that's right, it ain't the Texas of the movies - we are burdened by a large pro-government/anti-freedom contingent in the large cities. While it is nice to have CHL (CCW by another name), the restrictions we have on carry are such a nonsensical patchwork that it nearly ruins the whole concept. To be fair, some of our pro-gun legislators are working on it, but they could use some help.

That is interesting. I try to stay as up to date as possible on pending legislation regarding the CCW, but apparantly this one slipped under the radar. I do remember it being in committee some months back, but I never saw where it actually passed. I'll check that out. Thanks.

Absolutely! Mr. West stays a Dem because his Dad, the ex-Mayor of Nashville is a Dem. I have an older relative that is just as conservative as any of us but always votes Democrat. Her folks were Democrats so she still follows along. My grandparents were Democrats. It seems to be the older folks who do not see that the Democratic Party of the pre-60's has long been replaced by a semi-Marxist cabal. It is an insult to my grandparents and their generation that these folks have usurped the name Democrat to hide their Marxist leanings.

Correction: should have said Mr. West's Dad was a Dem. Might well be a Republican in today's environment if he was alive.

Wow, and I thought Michigan's law was bad...

That should drive the Yankee anti gun nuts crazy as wabbits. :)Most of the states that have no CCW laws at all are in the Midwest. I would say all of them except Ohio is still on the list of not having any CCW law. I noticed California still has a discretionary law which is a far cry from Vermont's "no license needed" laws.
To: Shooter 2.5
I noticed California still has a discretionary lawDiscretionary in Ca means it is up to your city or countys police chief or sherrif to decide if you are able to defend your self. Some (rural) counties are fairly liberal, but the big city places like San Diego, LA, SF all say no unless you are a celebrity or politically connected.
Don Petra, for example, is a congressman in the SF area who writes a lot of our victim disarmament legislature, yet he has a permit.
Normal citizens do not get permits.
