FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) A U.S. soldier died after his tank rolled over in deep mud during a training exercise in southern Germany, a spokesman with the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division said Thursday.
Two other soldiers managed to escape from the tank before it filled with water and mud, but the third became trapped below the gun turret and had to be freed by rescue workers, Maj. Thomas Shrader said.
The 24-year-old victim, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, died later in a German hospital.
The accident, which occurred last Friday, took place on the U.S. Army's main training area in southern Germany at Grafenwoehr. Several days of steady rain had soaked the training grounds, making it difficult to maneuver the heavy M1 tank which the soldiers were using for practice.
Soldiers in the 1st Armored Division, based in Germany, regularly conduct exercises at Grafenwoehr.

Sad. Not a very good way to go. That accident stateside today was another tragedy. Careful guys.

War is hell--dangerous business--and preparing for war is by necessity as close to reality as they can make it.
Praying for the soldier's family.

Sad for the loss of this patriot.

Another tank incident today...
Two soldiers killed in Louisiana exercise
FORT POLK, La., Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Two soldiers were killed Thursday when they were run over by an M-1 tank during a urban combat training exercise at Fort Polk, an Army spokesman said.
The soldiers assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) based at Fort Campbell, Ky., were flown by air ambulance to the Fort Polk hospital where they died from their injuries, said Ron Elliott, a Fort Polk spokesman.
The accident occurred about 5:20 a.m. "when an M-1 tank ran over the soldiers," Elliott said. The two were not part of the tank crew but were in the vicinity of the tanks, he said.
An assault was under way on a mock village as part of an urban combat training exercise being conducted at the sprawling Army post in central Louisiana.
About 4,000 soldiers are undergoing training at Fort Polk. Most are from the 101st Airborne division, but some other units are from Fort Riley, Kan.
Army safety experts from Fort Rucker, Ala., are expected at the post Thursday to begin an investigation of the accident, Elliott said.
The names of the victims were not released because next of kin have not been notified.
"Our sympathies go out to the families," Elliott said. "The U.S. Army lost two great soldiers this morning."
The 101st Airborne is a rapid-deployment, air-assault division trained for assignment anywhere around the globe with 36 hours. Units of the division recently returned from a deployment in Afghanistan.

Very sad, prayers for all our military. And a curse on Daschle and Her Heinous for bashing our military for not doing enough against the terrorists.

I don't know about the curse thing-but I do know that daschle and hillary's drive to place a wedge of doubt and distrust in our efforts to confront terror is one of the most dispicable, sickening, dispiriting, anti-American objective ever.
Do these two pigs ever consider how their comments impact our troops working so hard in Afganistan to rout out terrorist snipers, facing mines and other dangers to boot, compassionately delivering medical help and food and veterinary skills and agricultural help, not to mention helping in the actual rebuilding of the infrastructure. Do Daschle and hitlery ever CONSIDER the impact their horrendously negative and nasty comments IMPACT those directly involved? How can they stand themselves?
I am ashamed of these two sub-human freaks-we know that neither have the decency to be ashamed of themselves.

They attacked our military as not being effective. I placed a call to Daschle this afternoon 1-877-762-8762....and left a voice mail letting him know how I felt that he would attack our military and suggest they hadn't done a good enough job.
I hadn't heard her heinous until later but can't bring myself to ask for her office.
