Trading places Bobby Brown poses as a schoolmarm, Val Kilmer as a prude. Plus, J.Lo gets dissed on TV.

Nov. 12, 2002 | Talk about blowing it on national TV.
Fox News anchor Shepard Smith had something fairly egglike on his face last week when he launched into what should have been a straightforward item about tension between Jennifer Lopez and her old Bronx neighbors.
"J.Lo's new song 'Jenny From the Block' is all about Lopez's roots, about how she's still a neighborhood gal at heart," Shepherd declared innocently enough, before veering horribly off his teleprompted script. "But folks from that street in New York, the Bronx section, sound more likely to give her a curb job than a blow job!"
Oops!
Smith was quick to attempt a correction -- "Or a bl-bl-block party!" -- but it was too late. The damage was done, and the poor fellow knew it.
When the cameras switched back to Smith from a clip of Lopez shimmying in song, the anchor had a mighty rueful look on his face.
"Sorry about that slip-up there," he said gravely. "I have no idea how that happened, but it won't happen again."
Forgive and forget, J.Blow?

It's all over the 'Net - my brother in New Mexico e-mailed it to me a couple of days ago.
Shep made a pretty good recovery, though ;-)

You can tell how numbed I have become since the Clinton impeachment days, I heard it and processed it but wasn't shocked or outraged. I was confused. During the clip I kept thinking that it had nothing to do with what Shep had just used as the teaser. It was not until he came back and apologized for the statement after the clip that I realized the significance of his slip up.
I roared with laughter. Not at Shep but at myself. Duhhh---
I remember thinking, I hope this doesn't become a big deal. The look on Shep's face said it all.
One time, I meant to tell this older gentleman either that he was really on his toes - or he was really on the ball when he caught a math error that I had made. It came out "Thanks, you are really on your balls today."
Can happen to the best of us.

Pretty obvious what he was thinking about.

As the fictional Travis McGee would say, "I'd feel like I had been waiting in line."

I saw it live and was disappointed that it wasn't instantly posted on FR. I mean, if that wasn't breaking the news, what is?

Shep reads a script.. I wonder if someone put that in the script as a bad joke. Poor Shep... he looked genuinely mortified after that one!

Reminds me of one Palm Sunday at our parish: the deacon kept calling Pontius Pilate the "Procreator of Judea." Then my husband stage-whispered "Played by Anthony Quinn in the movie!" and half the congregation fell out of their seats while the other half just looked confused. I wish we'd had video!

Curb Job: person A open his mouth and places it over the edge of the curb. person B then stomps on the back of person A's head as hard as possible.
"American History X" has a good example of this, thankfully off-camera.
