Archerd: Rising Democrat is a friend of Hollywood

Hollywood -- and the creative community -- will have a friend leading the Democratic caucus in Congress when, on Thursday, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) becomes the first woman to head the minority reps.

She is taking over after Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.) announced he would not seek re-election as minority leader. (He will probably, however, seek the Dems' nomination to run for president.)

I met up with Pelosi at the Kodak Theatre Sept. 29 at Barbra Streisand (news)'s National Democratic Gala concert -- honoring Gephardt. At that time, the national election was a month away and the atmosphere was alive with enthusiasm. At the reception following the program, the AFI's Jean Firstenberg and Roz Wyman invited us to sit at their table and meet Pelosi and her husband, successful businessman Paul. The Pelosis had attended the AFI's Life Achievement Award dinner honoring Barbra Streisand in 2001. And Paul is a singer -- appearing in musicals in the San Francisco area.

Roz Wyman's association with Pelosi dates back to the Demo Convention in SanFran in 1984. "She (Pelosi) has many friends in the industry," Wyman told me. They include the Kirk Douglases, Warren Beatty (news) and Annette Bening (news) and Sherry Lansing, who co-hosted one of the Hollywood welcoming parties for Pelosi earlier this year.

And, of course, Jack Valenti has known Pelosi throughout her career and reminds, "She makes sure that our highest priority is protection of copyrights."

Hollywood's closest friends to Nancy Pelosi and her family must surely be Sid Ganis and his wife, Nancy Hult G. You recall, they optioned feature rights to daughter Alexandra Pelosi's documentary on George W. Bush, "Journeys With George." The highly praised documentary was created by the then-29-year-old NBC News producer on the campaign trail with contender Bush. It aired Election Night on HBO and repeats Wednesday, plus two more times.

Sid Ganis watched the election returns with the Pelosis in SanFran while wife Nancy was in Maine still stomping to the bitter end for Demo Chellie Pingree for the Senate. (P.S.: She lost in the GOP sweep.)

The Ganises are in confabs with Alexandra, who tells them, "All that the press wants to know now is -- 'Who is going to play me in your (the Ganises') movie'?"

I saw it and I thought it was great.

Anyone with a non-biased perspective would be completely disgusted at the things the presstitutes were saying about Bush, and Bush is so likeable that you couldn't help but feel anger at the press.

I believe it contributed to our Senate win actually.

The funniest part was seeing the press fight their inner demons when they began to really like Bush, even though they kept trying to make him look foolish and complain about the food, etc.

It's worth noting, then, that Nancy P is a big friend of the RIAA, which is for all kinds of crazy restrictions on what you can do with your computer, all in the name of preserving copyright.

I'm not against preserving copyright, but the way these restrictions are being handled is going to be bad news for users. For example, if you have an iPod or similar external music listening device, you won't be able to transfer music to it without jumping through a whole bunch of hoops.

Sony made a device designed to respect these rules, and reviews were horrible - you had to jump through way too many bureaucratic hoops to use your music, even when you had legitimate rights to do so.

To me, this is a strong indication that the Democratic party is going in the wrong direction. She will be a lapdog for the RIAA in exchange for campaign contributions.

Anyone who wants to be really up to speed on Rat politics these days needs to subscribe to daily Variety and read that cowflop Archerd. The relationships between the media (including Hollywood) and 'progressive' politics are incestuous and interwoven. There are no media 'coincidences.' Hollywood, the networks and most print media are simply arms of the DNC.

Nancy P's radical views and support of the RIAA could be the thing that shines the light on the RIAA tyrannical wants for all the people to see.

This could be considered a good thing for those who support freedom and technology.

The definition of "Hollywood reporter" has to include sycophant and weasel (Michael Medved being a lone exception).

I can think of a more appropriate appendage.

And I'm looking forward to that, as it will help the Slashdot crowd realize that Democrats are not their friends.

As Rush said, liberals are frightening when they're in power, and funny as heck when they're out of it.

Tony, you got to take these Clymers more seriously!

They control the foundations, the schools, the media, they have the precious time and the huge money to ponder all these imponderables. Meanwhile the Republican slobs are out there, making the money, making the whole machine work, and paying the taxes that support these wastrels and their NGO's and foundations, and 501-C-3s.

Every time you read one of these ridiculous statements, stop for a moment and think of the machinery, the expense, and the exquisite, leisurely planning it took to get it where you could see it. (Techniques and concepts that are completely alien to the RNC ... no matter how much money they spend.)

For a while the phrase "We gotta DE-FUND the Left," was popular. How come we forgot that? These people are out to destroy us, remake the country in their own Socialist or communal image, and we're paying for it? NOT!

Paul Pelosi, a San Francisco native, when he attended Georgetown University. After residing in New York for several years, they moved to San Francisco, where Paul has worked in the investment and real estate fields.

Pelosi smiles her way to the top

New York Times

Published Nov. 10, 2002 PELO10

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nancy Pelosi smiles so often, and so blindingly, that she can leave the impression that she has few other emotional expressions. It is an illusion, of course, and one she has used to great effect in becoming the highest-ranking woman in congressional history.

"I have to laugh when people pigeonhole her as a liberal," said California Sen. Barbara Boxer, an old friend who is usually similarly categorized. "What she really is, is a unifier. Her goal has always been consensus, not ideology."

Political pedigree

The Democratic Party is in Pelosi's blood. Her father, Thomas J. D'Alesandro Jr., was the Democratic mayor of Baltimore and later a congressman, and her brother, Tom, also served as the city's mayor. She grew up with a swirl of political activity in her household.

But she did not initially make politics a career. She married Paul Pelosi, who is now a wealthy businessman, and moved to San Francisco. She was a stay-at-home mother, raising the couple's five children.

``Politics was always her passion,'' said Alexandra Pelosi, a freelance television producer and filmmaker in New York City.

``She has worked tirelessly my entire life for the Democratic Party,'' said Alexandra Pelosi. Asked about her
mother's impending role as House minority leader, the younger Pelosi said: ``She's earned it. She has earned this title more than any man in Congress.''
