I felt that our veterans and current members of the military deserved a thread today. I hope that folks will join me in wishing them well on this thread.

I am so grateful beyond words, (and feel humbled), to all who have served.

Thank You for the thread. It really does mean a lot to a retired Navy Chief with twenty years of service.

Eulogy for a Veteran

Do not stand at my grave and weep.

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the Gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the mornings hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight,

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there, I did not die.

This is a thread from three years ago that I think you'd like to see:

Salute to FReeper Veterans; Check in!

Here is its follow-on from two years ago (exactly one year after the first one):

Your artwork has brought a tear to the eye of this vet. I would like to thank my father for his service in Vietnam and my Grandfather for his service in WWII. Neither will claim to be a hero, but both of them are.

Hopefully my 4 sons will be the first in four generations to serve in a peacetime military when their time comes.

"Bravo Zulu"

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.

And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind."

Thanks for your comments. Thanks to you and your family for the years of service. Sounds like you folks have been picking up the slack for those of us who didn't serve. It is appreciated.

Thanks for your contribution to the thread. If you are interested in an online memorial to your loved one, I will develop such a site. I think it would be an excellent place for people on FreeRepublic to visit to read about the experiences of those who paid the ultimate price for us. Many could learn from reading those stories.
