Antigua: Marchers clog Downtown

Protesters and supporters of the Opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) marched through the streets of St. John’s yesterday calling for a “ down tools protest” from businesses.

The protest march caused a bottleneck of traffic in the City resulting in police re-routting traffic to ease the congestion.

Chanting “We shall overcome” and “Lester you got to go” the protestors led by opposition leader, Baldwin Spencer headed up Market Street, down High Street, across Thames Street, up St. Mary’s Street, across Temple Street, down High Street up Long Street. They eventually wound their way down Corn Alley before making their way to the Office of the Prime Minister located on Queen’s Elizabeth Highway.

Carrying placards and samples of the Antigua & Barbuda passport #011815 which was issued to US sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad from the Passport Office, the protestors demanded an independent inquiry into how Muhammad obtained his passport.

“We are saying that there must be civil disturbance in Antigua & Barbuda if the authorities are not prepared to respond to the opposition’s request – We want a thorough investigation into the passport racket. We want this matter to be fully and thoroughly investigated. We don’t want any cover up. We want to know what happened to those thousands of passports that have been issued to people. Can you imagine that in little Antigua & Barbuda, they (the task force) say that over 7,000 passports are issued annually?

“We want to know all who get those passports that is why we are saying that this investigation must be thorough, it must be in depth, it must be forensically examined so that we will know whether or not our birthright has been taken away from us.

“Passports are sacrosanct documents – Our country’s image has been tarnished internationally,” Spencer said.

Some protectors dressed in white T-shirts with the emblem of an Antigua passport on the front, carried placards with the slogans “ Stop stealing our birthright,” “ How many Chinese and Russians brought our passport?” “ Lester and Lady Ena our passports are not for sale,” “ Is the Lester Bird kidnapping a hoax?.”

The UPP’s deputy political leader Wilmoth Daniel urged those on the sideline to join the protest line and called on those storeowners who were still plying their trade to “close your shops immediately. We will boycott your business. You’ve got to show your dissatisfaction with the government. We’ve got to wake up! Antigua & Barbuda belongs to us.”

Industrial relations officer of the Antigua & Barbuda Workers Union, Chester Hughes urged union members to take part in the tools down protest.

“We are tried of talking and it is time for action and I am saying to you that we have to join forces with the UPP and keep the pressure on. If not, our efforts will go in vain. At the end of the day only constant pressure will bring down the government,” he said.

Chairman of the UPP, George Daniel told the picketers, “we are sending a message to Lester Bird and the Antigua Labour Party that the people of Antigua & Barbuda have had enough of the ignorance that has been happening over the years. We stand here in solidarity, we are standing up for Antigua & Barbuda.”

The protest marched ended up outside the gate of the Office of the Prime Minister located on Queen’s Elizabeth Highway.

Spencer said that the UPP would mount more protest action during the course of next week.

United Progressive Party.....

“Passports are sacrosanct documents – Our country’s image has been tarnished internationally,”

Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture? I wish the "progressive/regressives" would make up ther minds!

I wonder exactly what they mean by the word "progressive." The root word is "progress," and that's why our Left has seized it. But you and I know that they are regressive.

No mercy.

Read it? I've lived it. Lived on an island in the Carribbean for almost 12 years! Important issues were swept under the rug, while unimportant issues were blown out of proportion everyday. If this Antigua protest is being done for the reasons they claim, it is very uncharacteristic of the people. Enjoyed the book. Could write one of my own.

It does seem a little odd to me -- seems as if someone or some group has stirred them up for other reasons.

Lived on St. Thomas for about 6 months til the tourists and long lines drove me out. Took a boat with my car, son and worldly possessions and went to live on St. Croix. Worked for the V.I. government in many capacities off and on over 11 1/2 years--not easy for a whitebread like me. But I had skills that were in demand. Last job I had was Manager of Operations (for all 3 islands) for the Department of Justice. You can get the St. Thomas and St. Croix news on line--search for "OneSource" if you're interested. They just had another melee of an election. Also visited many islands while in residence. The tropics get in your blood, no doubt about it. Retired to CA, but miss the islands. Where did you visit?

I wonder exactly what they mean by the word "progressive."

It is like anything else the left utters: they use it to mean the exact opposite of what everyone else thinks it means. Like the Prop. 209 initiative in CA a few years ago: the left hysterically characterized it as racist when it guaranteed equal rights under the law for everyone, regardless of race, creed, etc., and did away with quotas.
