Another corpse elected. What happens now?

I noticed in the final election returns that the late Rep Patsy Mink(D) was reelected in Hawaii. The newly elected Governor there is Linda Lingle(R). Will she appoint replacement for Mink or will there be a special election?

Noting that she was a DemocRAT, I wonder if she voted for herself?

Their will be two special elections. One to fill the remainder of Mink's current term (through 1-3-2003) and one to fill the new term. Governors can appoint to fill Senate vacancies. They cannot appoint to fill House vacancies.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you cannot appoint a Rep. They are the only body that must be elected. I think they will have to have another election or void her results. I wonder if the Republicans have big enough ones to callenge this now that they are in controll?

It really doesn't matter to the U.S. House whether Hawaii sends a Representative to Congress. It may, however, matter to the state of Hawaii. Why should the Republicans pick a fight when it's not necessary, and for a situation which lasts only for 1 1/2 months, and a relatively inactive 1 1/2 months at that?

Way to go, Dems.

Now one district in Hawaii is without representation. And they have to wait for a special election to fill that vacancy. Why leave her name on the ballot if you knew a replacement could not be named in a timely manner?

Don't blame the politicans. They couldn't help themselves. What about the ignorant voters?

Lautenberg--(I also thought this thread was about him!)--did you hear Rush's exerpts from his contributions to the Senatorial debate? Not just incoherent, but senile dementia--the people of NJ heard, and elected him.

NJ, you're no Minnesota.

I thought this thread meant that Mondale won! Wellstone or Mondale, what was the difference? Well, since corpses can vote demoncrat, what's stopping them from running for office. No wonder election day follows closely behind Halloween.

There's also the Catholic "All Souls Day" and the Mexican "Day of the Dead" around the same time. Lots of opportunities for the dead to get ready to vote.

I read that they will have a special election on November 30 to fill her current, unexpired term. Her husband would like to run in that one. But he doesn't want to run in the election for her new term (the one to which she was re-elected Tuesday.) It seems odd, but these are Democrats.
