Neil Cavuto just interviewed Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., the director of the OMB, and Neil let it be known that he's hearing rumblings that Pres. Bush is considering a total re-write of the tax code and that SecTreas O'Neill is strongly pushing a national retail sales tax!

No NRST until a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT REPEALING the 16th amdnement i spassed. It could set the date the 16th and Income tax are abolished (x months after adoption by the states).

You are correct absent a repeal of the 16th amendment we will end up with both. The rat sponsors of HR 2525(?) understand this.

A Flat Tax would be the best solution under the current POLITICAL situation.

The 16th amendment should be repealed (the 17th too, but that's another story).

I also am in favor of repealing the 16th and 17th. Just a thought, but instead of repealing the 17th, an alternative might be to mandate that all campaign donations be acquired from the individual citizens within the district (for a representative) or state (for a senator) in which the representative or senator, respectively, is seeking to represent. No campaign donations shall come from anyone but those individuals (e.g., no corporate donations, etc.), and no personal money incorporated into the campaign larger than the largest individual donation from outside the immediate family of the campaigner. Also forbid all lobbying to the campaigner or elected member, directly or indirectly, by any entity other than individuals actually being represented. This might have the effect of giving power back to the people. Again, just a thought.

That would still leave the IRS in place. I want them on the Borders. Let them work for the country, instead against the country.

Without 67 conservative republicans in the Sneate and 280 conservative republicans in the house you cannot pass a constitutional amendment repealing the 16th amendment. Remember 2/3 majority in each house required to pass a constitutional and ratification by 38 states.

Even if the IRS is abolished, if the 16th amendment is not repealed we will end up with another Income Tax and another IRS.... as soon as the rats come back into power. Then we will have BOTH a NRST and Income tax.

If we cna repeal the 16th amendment grest, just do it. Otherwise, No Thanks.

I've read through the Fair tax page, and it sounds interesting. However, for now, we only know the treasury is looking into national sales tax - not that they would support this exact plan.

As a business owner, I would prefer to be out of the tax collection business entirely. I am, however, interested in the portion of this plan which would compensate my business for collecting the tax. That would really help.

I will have to do some serious calculations concerning the proposed rate, though. On the surface, that 23% rate is a shocker and it will take some time to compute how that will stack up against what I pay now.

The one downside is that eliminating the income tax will immediately devalue all residential real estate by about 20 percent.

No it won't. The value of an income tax deduction for home interest is that you end up paying home mortgage interest out of untaxed dollars. That's not going away. The dollars spent on home mortgage interest will be untaxed dollars.

It will be far easier to save for a home (more disposeable income to save that will grow faster). It will be far easier to qualify for a mortgage (lower interest rates by 25% and a lot of folks qualify).

But the real estate lobby will scream bloody murder.

Actually the real estate industry LOVES this idea. They'll sell many more homes.

The 1913 income tax amendment is also un-Constitutional. It was never ratified by the States and that nullifies it! (or so they say...) I'm for a NST whatever happens. Anything beats the IRS and the incomprehensible Tax Code!
