Jailed Traficant Gets 15 Percent
Wednesday November 6, 2002 4:30 PM
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Former Ohio Rep. James A. Traficant Jr.'s fight to take back his House seat came up short Tuesday - but he did manage to attract more than 27,000 votes in a campaign from his Pennsylvania prison cell.
Traficant, who was expelled from the House in July and is serving eight years in federal prison on bribery and racketeering convictions, was running as an independent from behind bars. He finished third in Tuesday's voting, grabbing 15 percent of the vote. Democrat Tim Ryan won.
``The biggest obstacle was that he couldn't campaign,'' said Tish Traficant, the former congressman's wife. ``Other people had to do it for him.''
Traficant had appealed to voters to re-elect him to show they don't fear the government. ``I believe I can do a better job than half the people down in Washington,'' he said in a low-budget campaign ad filmed the day before he was sentenced in July.
(If the image goes away, it's only an indication bandwidth has been exceeded. Try again later!)
Yep, that's what's wrong with our country. No right; no wrong; just allies and those "who feel our pain."
You can be a crook, a liar --- no matter. As long as Mr. Traficant "feels their pain" (anger towards IRS), they'll vote for him.
