Doesn't ANYONE want to win the Senate???

I just read the Landrieu "educaton" thread and realized that neither the GOP nor the Dems seem to want to win control of the Senate. Let's look at each side:
The GOP:
- Shoo-in Phil Gramm unexpectedly retires
- Shoo-in Fred Thompson unexpectedly retires
- Shoo-in Jesse Helms retires (but he and Strom have certainly earned their rest)
- Bob Smith decides to run as a write-in to spite the man who beat him in the primaries, and possibly costing the party the Senate
- Tim Hutchison, AR shoo-in, decides to dump his wife for his hottie just before election time, turning a sure-thing into a real race
The Democrats:
- File suit to overturn election laws to replace The Torch with Frank "Fossil" Lautenberg and his deer-in-the-headlights look
- Nominate unappealing Walter "Fossil II" Mondale to replace
- Imitate the Nuremberg Youth Rally at a memorial Service in MN, offending voters nation-wide
- Run ads in Louisiana touting the issues that are important to voters, including "Educaton" first
- decide to run Carnahan, rather than a real candidate, for the special election (or was she the only possible candidate?)
TOPICS: Government; Politics/Elections; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: blunders; election; senate
At least we're not the only ones shooting themselves in the foot this time around! ;^)

The last team to fumble loses!

I would add:
GOP fails to run Racicot in Montana
RATS fail to run Kitzhaber in Oregon.

It's Going To happen. It's A War Zone here in Minnesota, Need to Take the Battle to The Streets, and get the message out in the key 7 battles, and it can happen...

Yep. Thanks. I'm trying to who tried to exploit the sniper attacks, too. Was that a Senate race, or Governor?

Hope it's going well in Minnesota...After three failed long distance phone calls (terrible campaign voice mail system), made a contribution to Coleman. Hope springs eternal!

Shoo-in Fred Thompson unexpectedly retiresDear God, I'll miss Senator Thompson. His best line ever (outside of "Blazing Saddles" was when he offered (in commitee, during the Ruby Ridge hearings) to let Swienstein shoot at him from 1 1/2 miles away with a 9mm. Swienstein had pointed to and read a warning on a box of ammo that said the bullets were dangerous up to 1 1/2 miles away. FOTFLMAO.

Wasn't that the Maryland Governor campaign!

Fred Thompson's daughter died right around the time that he had to commit to run for re-election. You can hardly blame him. Unlike some people, Thompson did not think "WE WILL WIN! WE WILL WIN!" when his daughter died. He just wanted to spend more time with his remaining family.

Yep, and also by Garrett in NJ's House race.

7 key battles?
I thought there were 10 in play (AR, CO, GA, MN, MO, NH, NC, OR, SD, TX),
and 6 that could be surprises (IA, LA, ME, NJ, SC, TN)
Which are the big 7?

You spreading the word about Mondale "tax their asses off?" :)
To: Teacher317
Oh, yeah, we can also add Democrat Patsy Mink in Hawaii... she was on life-support while the expiration dates for replacing her on the ballot passed. She'll still probably win, but you never know. Imagine how the Dems will scream if she "fails them" from beyond the grave.

I would be more involved but my job keeps me busy 12 hours a day at least. Nevertheless I'm making small attempts to get the message out (telling friends and family and such). I even talked a stranger into voting for Terrell since she was against Landrieu.

Nah. The GOP and RATS took a look at the s---hole that is the Senate and said "F--- it."

You left out Gov. Tom Kean refusing to run in NJ.
File suit to overturn election laws to replace The Torch with Frank "Fossil" Lautenberg and his deer-in-the-headlights look--A guy who'll likely win his race, so a good call by the Dems.
Nominate unappealing Walter "Fossil II" Mondale to replace [Wellstone].--This was a perfectly smart thing to do.
Imitate the Nuremberg Youth Rally at a memorial Service in MN, offending voters nation-wide--This is the ONLY reason that Mondale is having trouble; it's hurt Democrats in other states, too.
Run ads in Louisiana touting the issues that are important to voters, including "Educaton" first--Landrieu has run a fine race. She'll likely win a run-off by several points.
decide to run Carnahan, rather than a real candidate, for the special election (or was she the only possible candidate?)--The Dems could have nominated anyone, but Carnahan raised an incredible amount of money and she still had the sympathy factor in her favor. This wasn't a dumb idea. It would have hurt the Dems to be seen as forcing Carnahan out.
