Delivering a Touch of Home
.

.
A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.
Snow Bunny

.
If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae

CASUAL SATURDAY AT THE CANTEEN
Liberty commences at the beginning of today's FReeper USO Canteen thread and, depending on your division assignment, expires when the new thread for Sunday is posted.
***** A special invitation to our troops and Veterans to join us in today's cyber trip. *****

Historic Wickford is the
original town center of
North Kingstown, Rhode Island,
and it is a place where time
seems to have stopped in the 1820s
Wickford's most famous native
is the renowned novelist, John
Updike, a descendant of one of
the village's founders, and it is
generally agreed that Wickford
provides the setting for his popular
novel, "The Witches of Eastwick".
(The movie that was based on the
book, however, was not made in Wickford.)

The bustling harbor glistens as
elegant yachts, luxury liners and

All of these combined are the

Founded in 1639, Newport's
first residents were settlers

The area was soon recognized
for its ideal trade location and
quickly developed into one of
the major seaports on the east

trade ships billowed into the
harbor, crowding the wooden
docks and bringing exotic treasures.

43rd Military Police Brigade
The Headquarters of the 43D Military Police Brigade, Rhode Island Army National Guard, is located in the Warwick Armory, Airport Road, Warwick, Rhode Island. Within the Rhode Island Army National Guard, the 43D Military Police Brigade exercises command and control over the 118th Military Police Battalion, and its three (3) separate Military Police companies. In addition, the Brigade has a Medium Truck Company attached.
The 1207th Transportation Company, Rhode Island Army National Guard, is located at the Fogarty Armory, Camp Fogarty, 2841 South County Trail, East Greenwich, Rhode Island 02818. The 1207th is also the parent organization of Organizational Maintenance Shop #3, located in Warwick, RI. Soldiers in this unit are trained as truck drivers and mechanics. The Company's mission is to provide for the movement of both dry and refrigerated containerized cargo, bulk water and bulk petroleum products by motor transport.
The 43rd Military Police Brigade was constituted 4 March 1959 and allotted to the Rhode Island Army National Guard as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 103d Replacement Battalion. Organized and Federally recognized 1 April 1959 at Providence. Converted and redesignated 18 March 1963 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 43d Engineer Group. Converted and redesignated 1 May 1968 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 43d Military Police Brigade. Reorganized and redesignated 1 May 1976 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 43d Military Police Brigade.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 23 May 1972, consisitn of a gold anchor vertically bisecting a horizontal white enamel wavy band on a green background all encircled by a continuous gold scroll, divided in four folds the upper three inscribed "PROTECT THE RIGHT" in green letters, Green and yellow are the colors used by the Military Police. The gold anchor adapted from the Rhode Island State Flag, and the wavy band, simulating the water of Narragansett Bay, allude to the home area of the organization.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 16 May 1969, consisting of a green shield with a yellow wall of two crenelles above three green wavy bars, issuing from base and surmounted overall a white pike all within a yellow border. The fortification above the wavy bars alludes to the wall surrounding the 15th century city of Rhodes, capital of the Island of Rhodes in the eastern Mediterranean after which Rhode Island was named. The wavy bars also represent Narragansett Bay and the many waterways of the state. The pike, any early weapon used by guards symbolizes the 43d Military Police Brigade's ability to give protection and strong support.
Soldiers from the 43rd MP Brigade deployed in early May 2002 to Guantanamo Bay to replace the outgoing 89th Military Police Brigade from Fort Hood, TX, as the new headquarters element for Joint Task Force 160. They arrive at Guantamo Bay on May 13, 2002.
