Three young boys charged with raping six-year-old girl

by Matt Scherling, city editor October 25, 2002

Three boys, ranging in age from eight to 10, have been called into juvenile court, charged with gang-raping a six-year-old girl in the basement of a Madison apartment building.

June 17, the victim allegedly went into the basement of an apartment building at 17 Capitol View; a group of boys followed her and took turns holding her down while each raped her, according to juvenile court documents.

Deputy Dane County district attorney Michael Walsh said this case of sexual assault is the most brutal juvenile crime he has dealt with during his tenure in Madison.

"In terms of the sexual nature of this, it is [the most violent]," said Walsh, who feels the accused boys were unaware of the serious nature of their actions.

The charge each boy faces, a class B felony, carries a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison for those tried and convicted as adults.

Each of the three boys named in the document was accused of "sexual intercourse with another person, without her consent and by use of force while aided or abetted by one or more other persons."

Two boys, one of whom attended school with the victim, "took hold of her legs and dragged her, and [one of the boys] was the subject who removed her clothing," according to the report.

When questioned by the Dane County Department of Human Services June 20, the victim, when asked which boys attacked her, replied, "all of them."

The nine-year-old suspect told police the 10-year-old threatened him, forcing him to assault the girl.

"They told me to 'rape her or we'll beat you up,'" he said.

Walsh said the boys, given their ages, would most likely be placed under supervision in programs designed to help them rather than punish them.

"What we're really looking for is an intervention geared to their age," Walsh said. "We want to teach them how injurious their behavior is, how serious it is and to help them respect the personal safety and boundaries of others."

O'Reilly mentioned this on his program tonight. I searched here on FR but didn't see it posted. If anyone has more information about this heinous crime, I'd like to find out more.

I realize that these animals can't be tried as adults, but will they just get off with a slap on the wrist? That young girl will have to live with the aftermath of this horrible crime, but what about the perps?

Yeah, I'm sure that the need to pin the victim to the floor didn't give them
a clue they were doing anything wrong.

All I know is that if I was a relative of the victim and if I came down with a terminal disease,
these little "Lords Of The Flys" would be in more trouble than the "justice system"
will visit on them.

Gosh, how should young boys even know of things like this? Talking about girls and things like that is all natural and human but...this kind of behavior makes me really wonder about how children are being raised. Something is missing in their lives, their hearts and their souls.

God bless the little girl. I hope there is some way medically that can erase this from her memory. I understand the ages of the boys but...what about the innocent little six year old? God helps this country. We care NOT about anything anymore nor do we hold anything sacred. I wonder abut the shape of things to come for our children and grandchildren. It is a most horrendous thought.

Nonsense. While I'm quite sure they didn't grasp the legal ramifications of their actions, you can bet they knew that raping a little girl was a extremely bad thing to do. These kids need more than "a little help."

Look at the tvs in homes and probably their bedrooms. The sexualizing of children is epidemic in this country. But don't even begin to think that I am excusing these boys.

What will probably happen? We will pay to keep them in a holding facility and allow them to have teachers who will probably instruct them indiviually. It makes me sick.

No.

What we're really looking for is their parents, to put them in stir for a year, where justice will be swift.

As for the perps, they should be let free--just not in this country, and not from an altitude less than a thousand feet.

"...during his tenure in Madison."

Madison is the operative term here. Their punishment will be having to listen to preachy social workers and shrinks. By the time they're done, these boys will be begging for prison time.

Then why did they wait until she was indoors.

Although they may not have foreseen how much trouble they are in now, they clearly understood that they would get in trouble if someone saw.

The sexualizing of children is epidemic in this country. It's the sexualization of adults that is a problem: one cannot hide from that.

That is almost universal. Witness Jay Leno telling flatulence jokes day in and day out, jokes that did not honor a fifteen-year-old if he told them. Today, a close to 60, gray-haired man is telling them from the stage and more loudly he says the word "penis" the more uproar it creates in the audience.

The are no children their in that act. Just dirt. But the children see such things, and they see the reactions and the equally crude language of their adult relatives. That's all.

Sounds like a couple of kids need a good old fashioned Hank Williams jr. Attitude adjustment. heaven help them when they get it.

Well, it seems that there is criminal intent provided, and understanding to the responsibilities of ones actions. Now, will there be any accountability on the part of the parents and the community for their actions, or will this be "swept under the rug" 'cause of whatever shortcomings provided by the media/community?

It is a sad day when children think that predating on a child by other children is acceptable behavior. Lord help us with these non-responsible children.

Sarcasm on

I would be horrified to find out that these upstanding boys were not influenced by media that was not censored by the parents. (i.e music videos, accessability to porn, and cultural acceptance of degredation of the opposite gender, such as using derogatory names for girls and women, treating them less than human...)

/Sarcasm Off

Was any ethnicity mentioned about these children along with the victim? or can I assume that this is an intra-ethnicity attack?

This girl's internal reproductive system could be ruined for life. I hope this girl's parents sue the hell out of the parents of these boys for personal and medical damages.

Oh come on, the perps will be taught "how injurious their behavior is, how serious it is and to help them respect the personal safety and boundaries of others." Gee, how about how WRONG it is to rape?

I saw this on O'Reilly tonite and a sugggestion was made that maybe the perps knew how to perform the act because they'd been sexually abused themselves. (This was put forward as a possibility, not a fact.)

I saw this on O'Reilly tonight as well.

I doubt that all of these boys were sexually abused. These punks probobaly are regular consumers of gangsta rap and the drug culture that goes with it. These punks are probably in their own pre teen gang and devised a plan to have sex with a vulnerable female and lure her where they could get what they want. I wouldn't be surprised if they've had sex before with other young female classmates or at least harassed them for it. These boys are probably real troublemakers in school, if they even attend. When these punks are released after they've been "rehabilitated" they will quickly move onto their gang banger careers and graduate to pimps, prostitute rapists and killing hos.

That's what I don't understand. I'm in my mid-40's, and can't understand 9 and 10 year old boys even THINKING about rape. We barely thought about girls at that age, outside of "cooties", and we boys and girls taunted each other quite often, out of rivalry. What in the H is going on with this? They learned this somewhere. Their teachers can rot in fire.
