Bush-Brogan Campaign Calls on McBride to Stop Teachers’ Union from Exploiting Children to Get Out the Vote for Democrats

Tallahassee - The Bush-Brogan Campaign today called on Democrat Bill McBride to stop the teachers’ union, who is running his campaign for governor, from exploiting children for their get out the vote efforts.

An e-mail was sent from Pat Tornillo, president of United Teachers of Dade, to Miami-Dade County teachers asking them to send notes home with their students urging parents to vote for Bill McBride for governor.

“Bill McBride should immediately call on his supporters and the people running his campaign to stop using children for his own political gain,” said Todd Harris, communication director of the Bush-Brogan Campaign. “It is shameful to ask teachers to use their position of authority and influence over students in this manner.”

Attached is the text of the e-mail that was sent to teachers on October 30.

Subj. Send a note home to parents about the election
Date: 10/30/2002 11:27:42 AM Eastern Standard Time
From: Pat@UTOFD.com
Sent from the Internet

As President of the United Teachers of Dade I am asking our members to send the following note home to the parents of their students:

As your child’s teacher, I ask you to vote on November 5. Miami-Dade County’s teachers support Bill McBride, Amendments 8, 9 & 11. We feel the future of public education has never been at greater risk.

The election of Bill McBride and passage of these amendments will significantly improve public education in Florida.

Please make sure these notes are received in the homes no later than Monday, November 4th. Together, we CAN make a difference in this election. It is within our grasp.

Sincerely,
Pat Tornillo, President
United Teachers of Dade

UTD has endorsed BILL McBRIDE for GOVERNOR and ANITA SANDLER for SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 6

Someone should let Drudge know about this. It is really over the top what the union is doing. I think any teacher who does this would be violating state law, specifically, the Ethical Code of Teacher Conduct in FL. Doesn't a union president know that????!!!

The reason why this crooked socialist SOB Tornillo feels comfortable in sending this out is because he knows that he won't be indicted .

This is the same SOB that is trying in court to force teachers that refuse to join the union to pay union dues!

Florida is a right to work state.

If a Republican pulled this, he would be dragged into court by rat prosecutors in an NY minute.

Who's more to blame, the crook, or the prosecutors who are too timid to do anything about it?.

Additional info from my link above:

(5) Obligation to the profession of education requires that the individual:

...(c) shall not interfere with a colleague's exercise of political or civil rights and responsibilities.

This union president fein shock that some students' parents teach in other schools, and, they may consider themselves collegues as well as parents. I hope these parents/teachers file a complaint against him for doing this -- it is really awful to exercise such domination and control, in using a student as a messenger, less than a week before an election everyone knows McMumble will likely lose.
