Year of the Democrat Dinosaur

Ordinarily, Minnesota and New Jersey have little in common other than a mutual penchant for liberal politics. This year, however, it seems they share a mutual problem: the hasty departure of incumbent Democrat candidates for the Senate, necessitating replacements with name recognition with known political positions. To be fair, nobody could have predicted the untimely death of Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-Minn.), and in this case the need for a quick replacement is readily understood. But the Jersey Democrats should have seen it coming with regard to Sen. Robert Torricelli (D-N.J.). Toward the end, The Torch was carrying so much baggage people were mistaking him for Sky-Cap.

The solution in both cases: a quick trip to the Museum of Political History to resurrect, in each case, a dinosaur indigenous to the state in question. For New Jersey it was the Lautosaurus, a.k.a., former senator Frank Lautenberg, a Garden State variety of thunder lizard known for making Laut noises, and, most recently, impugning the patriotism of his political opponent because Republican Doug Forrester didn't jump up and volunteer to serve in Vietnam. This, coming from one who for eight years championed a president who not only dodged the draft, but did everything he could to gut our military (which he loathed, in writing yet), compromise our national security, and make us vulnerable to attack ala 9-11. This is nothing less than hypocrisy of the highest order, and no Republican could ever have gotten away with it; the liberal media would have been all over him before the words even finished coming out of his mouth. As anyone who has read Bernard Goldberg's book, "Bias", already knows.
