The working women and female business leaders of Augusta, Ga. have a message for the National Council of Women's Organizations and its chair 'person' Martha Burk: Get Lost!
Women in Augusta say that if the Augusta National Golf Club cancels the 2003 Masters tournament, which may happen, it would only hurt female business owners, homeowners, caterers, hostesses, waitresses, housekeepers and service personnel of all types who make a lot of their yearly earnings from the month-long buildup to the PGA Tour's first Major of the year, in April.
The Masters pumps over $100 million into the local economy each year, and schools even close so that families can go on vacation and rent out their houses for as much as $2000 a bedroom.
Diane Starr, owner of Corporate Quarters and catering firm Masters Kitchen Kaddies, told USA Today her two companies do $2 million in sales and employ about 400 people for Masters week.
But this year some corporate clients are on "standby" because of the flap. "Everybody's scared they will cancel the tournament," Starr says. "I don't think Martha Burk realizes that getting one woman member could throw thousands of women out of work that week."
"It would be a travesty for women, not help women," said Elaine Clark Smith, owner of Elaine Clark Consulting.
Burk ridiculously says women should blame their woes on Augusta National Chairman Hootie Johnson, even though it was her letter that started the whole controversy over female membership at a private club that can do whatever it wants, and against the club's chairman who has been a gracious, charitable and most of all progressive leader at the Club and in the community.
Cancel it, Hootie, Cancel........
Time for the public to learn the truth behind these organizations. It will be easier to stop them if they show their true side. Many people forget that NOW did not speak up regarding Blow Job Bill and Monica. Time for all Americans to see the real side of NOW and other American hate groups.
