A federal district judge in Sacramento yesterday ordered the release of letters implicating California Gov. Gray Davis in a racketeering scandal.

The release of letters in the decade-old case could be a blow to the Democrat's re-election campaign against Republican challenger Bill Simon.

Ten-year-old unsubstantiated allegations from a convicted criminal looking to strike a deal? Nice. Real convincing. Purely coincidental timing, too. This will be sure to impress the voters.

Thanks for posting. The undecided voters will take Simon over the top. Dems won't bother getting out of bed to vote for Dufus. And too many voters are outraged at the corruption and sleeze. DUMP DAVIS

I've always wondered. Do the type of people who would vote for someone like Davis care about this sort of thing?

Maybe unsubstantiated, but if proven untrue, could hurt the deal and come back to haunt at a parole hearing.

If Davis is certain the charges are untrue, he could have had them unsealed two years ago, giving plenty of time to prove them untrue. This may not swing the election, but it will cost a point or two, and he hasn't reached 50% in the polls yet. Question is, why not? Bush in florida has finally topped 50% without counting undecideds.

Davis campaign spokesman Roger Salazar dismissed the Nathanson accusations. "In a last desperate attempt to salvage his campaign by making further reckless accusations against Davis, the Simon campaign has been pumping a story about ridiculous charges by a criminal seeking to reduce his prison term," Mr. Salazar said.

Boy, they are desperate. Simon hasn't been pumping this story at all ... this story has been around for a decade before Simon even considered running for Governor, and Simon had nothing to do with the court releasing or not releasing the documents. To spin it like this ... how pathetic ... and the press doesn't even call him on it!

Do you think Davis has Teflon on?

I think it just adds confirmation to what everyone believes about Davis;

No, they don't, but independents, undecideds (both DEm and Rep) and third party candidates do. The base ... about 40% for the Dems and 40% for the Reps ... don't care (the Dems will tout all the "good" things Davis has done, ala Bill Clinton, and the Reps will say, there's another reason to dump the liberal Davis.)

This may do damage to him, because their spin -- that Simon had something to do with this -- is just not going to hold water, provided that the press calls him on it, which they won't. Hopefully, people will be smart enough to see it themselves. It's pretty blatant.
