“Top Ten” House and Senate Conservative List and Predictions for the 2002 Election

This is the final cumulative “top ten” Conservative Index for the 107th Congress as published in the New American magazine.

Senate

1. Kyl 75
2. Smith/Helms 73
3. Gramm 72
4. Nickles 66
5. Ensign 64
6. Inhofe, Voinovich, Sessions 63
7. Thurmond, Bunning, Enzi, Santorum 62

Unfortunately, three of the top four conservative heroes in the Senate are “retiring” this year—Smith, Helms and Gramm. (#2 ranked Bob Smith was defeated by Rep. John Sununu (R-NH) (Conservative Index rating 50) who is currently running slightly behind his opponent in the New Hampshire Senate race).

House

1. Paul (R-TX) 91
2. Flake (R-AZ) 88
3. Hostettler (R-IN) 86
4. Tancredo (R-CO) 85
5. Rohrbacher (R-CA)/Duncan (R-TN) 81
6. Goode (R-VA), Royce (R-CA) 79 Schaffer (R-CO) 78
8. Sensenbrenner (R- WI) 77
9. Jones (R-NC) 74
10. Hefley (R-CO) 73

Some curious facts. Did you know that three of the top six conservative Republicans in the House voted against the resolution to grant the President constitutional authority to launch an unprovoked invasion of Iraq? They are Paul, Hostettler and Duncan.

Leadership stats for 108th Congressional Republican Leadership

Senate

Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott (R-MI) 60

Senate Assistant Republican Leader candidates

Larry Craig (R-ID) 57
Mitch McConnell (R-KY) 53

In an unfortunate development for conservatives, our fine principled conservative current Senate Assistant Republican Leader Don Nickles (66) in term limited and has dropped his bid to challenge Lott for Republican leader and has hinted at possible plans to retire from the Senate. I had hoped he would run against and defeat Lott, but apparently he has polled his Senate GOP comrades and the votes aren’t there to do it. Lott is likely to remain unchallenged for the top GOP Senate post. The other top conservative I have long advocated for Senate Republican Leader is the #1 ranked conservative in the US Senate for the 107th Congress, John Kyl. At minimum, Kyl should run for the open post of Assistant Republican Leader to clear the way for him to become Republican and hopefully Majority Leader sometime soon. We need an Assistant Majority Leader who is more not less conservative than Trent Lott although of the declared candidates, Larry Craig would obviously be the better choice.

House GOP Leadership

Speaker Denny Hastert 60
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay 59
House Majority Whip Roy Blunt 52

These stats don’t show the true picture because Hastert’s Conservative Index rating is not a true measure of his conservativeness as he only votes on the most important issues to the GOP. He generally scores in the 53-54 range. Hastert is a bipartisan Speaker except on the Bush signed Democrap campaign finance reform bill which he rightly condemned as amounting to Armageddon for GOP control in the House once it is implemented in the 2004 Elections. Hastert knows that the days of a Republican Congress are numbered due to the Bush signed Democrap campaign finance reform bill. A lot of good Republicans will probably retire once they realize they have been relegated to permanent minority status by this bill further padding Democrap one-party rule following the 2004 elections.

DeLay is a more reliable conservative than Hastert and will make a fine replacement for outgoing moderate conservative House Majority Leader Dick Armey. I would be happier if he or Chris Cox (R-CA) 61 would challenge Hastert for the Speakership.

Predictions for 2002 Election.

This year will see a brief return to one party Republican rule beginning in November with the election of Jim Talent to the Senate switching control of the Senate GOP immediately upon his swearing in next month. The GOP is set to score a one-seat net pickup this election in the Senate, which may tempt liberal Republican John Chafee (R-RI) 35 to pull another Jeffords and switch parties to the Dems. The Republicans will likely gain two to three seats in the House increasing their current 223-212-1 house majority.

Predications for 2004 Election

In 2004, the Iraq war/occupation quagmire which will likely result in thousands of US casualties from Saddam’s CBR attacks, a double-dip economic recession, rampant illegal immigration and amnesties in critical border states like Texas and most of all the one-sided Democrat campaign finance reform legislation signed by the President will combine to result in a great Democrat electoral wave which will result in the election of a more or less permanent Democrat majority in both houses of Congress and will return the White House to Democrap control with Al Gore being George Bush’s most likely successor.

" they are not supporting the conservative position. "

This is where you cross the line into dishonesty. If you keep your complaints on Iraq to your opinion of the merits of the matter you could be taken seriously.

TO THE SECRETARY OF WAR. (HENRY DEARBORN.)
MONTICELLO, August 28, 1807.
"...such presents as would show a friendly liberality should at the same time be made to those who unequivocally manifest intentions to remain friends; and as to those who indicate contrary intentions, the preparations made should immediately look towards them; and it will be a subject for consideration whether, on satisfactory evidence that any tribe means to strike us, we shall not anticipate by giving them the first blow."

And the reasons and method congress used to authorize the war is well-respected by our Founders:

An Act Further to Protect the Commerce of the United States July 9, 1798.

An Act for the Protection of the Commerce and Seamen of the United States, Against the Tripolitan Cruisers. February 6, 1802.

If you stick to stating your objections to the war as a practical matter- that is a subject worthy of debate.
But when you try to demonize it as unconservative, the history of our country and words of our founders show otherwise.

You do not believe that a government employee should have the right to share his or her opinion with others on the Internet either during or after work hours.

I don't much care what you do or say after work hours, but I damn sure don't want you expressing your opinion on the internet during the hours the taxpayers are paying you a salary to work. Do it on your OWN time, not the public's.

You have been very clear about your anti-First Amendment views in this regard.

Has nothing to do with the 1st Amendment. It has to do with your actions, which are the equivalent of stealing from the public treasury. As a conservative, you should understand this.

Does your employer at DoD know what you have been up to and how much you have bragged about access to classified information? You and your calling us RINO's because we are not far right is a cheap shot! But worse is the following: you wrote: "Now, I think high casualties in Iraq resulting from their CBR attacks against our troops and a double-dip recession from Iraq and the Brazilian default will all combine to tip the scales and inaugerate a new nightmare for America with Algore as President." I have no respect for anyone that comes on here and brags about having classified defense information and then posts how bad we are going to take casulaties by Sadaam! As a former DoD employee I find that beneath contempt!

I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Why would you take offense from my prediction that we are going to take a lot of casualties from Saddam’s CBR attacks and my desire to avoid such casualties and thus save thousands of American lives? A lot of experts and military folks have been predicting that. You should be commending me for advocating policies that would save the lives of our brave American fighting men, not needlessly sacrifice them. You are getting your panties in a bunch over nothing. BTW, I never bragged about having access to classified information. Some loser asked me about ten times if I had a classified intel report to back that up and I told him that I never would reveal classified info to anyone let alone a lowlife like him. You should know that parroting the lying accusations of your anti-American friends will get you nowhere with me. I support our President, the conservative Republican cause and America. It is increasingly obvious that your petty "friends" trying to lead you astray don’t.

I doubt seriously that the guy is who he says he is...more likely he is trying to get in trouble whoever holds the position [or one of them] he claims to hold.

I havent read anything he has posted but considering Sec Rumsfeld's own statements about personnel inside the Pentagon with big mouths...I doubt the guy is for real.

There are much better forums to speak your mind if this was the perspective of a pentagon insider.

Maybe gunrunner2 could share some insight.

I'll never forget it.

I have too much respect for CWOJackson (I'm personally safer in my city because of his service to our country - and I happen to know he is BUSTING it for all of us), Long Cut, Poobah, COB1, and the others here who deserve our respect and support because of the sacrifices they have made (and in some cases, continue to make) to let it go. The despicable remark that was made to Texasforever - the proud father of a young man serving right now as a United States Marine - absolutely frosted me.

Nope. Not letting it go.

(Courtesy pinging those whose names I mentioned - and as long as I briefly have your attention, I'll take this opportunity to thank you all for being real men.)

Hmmmmm...well, I remember rightwing2 calling an officer in the Coast Guard "commie lib anti-military never served and never will" (paraphasing there, but very close), flinging miscellaneous insults and epithets at other active duty military, declaring that the proud father of a United States Marine wished his son dead, making mention of his supposed access to classified information to prop up his anti-Bush, anti-war rhetoric, calling someone (a Marine, I believe) "gay boy" or some such thing (didn't see that one myself - just heard about it)...and I could go on. That's what I remember. It made an impression on me, to say the least.

Yes, I did respond to an endless string of insults against me for CWOJackson's attempts to demonize me and destroy me in a very personal way by eliminating my livelihood and that of my family. At the time I did not know he was a vet. Knowing that I am a proud vet who served my country in the United States Army certainly did not stop him, you or your malicious comrades from smearing me with your lying accusations.

However, to say that I insulted any other serving or retired military vet is a bald-faced lie. I did not and have not ever insult any other vet on this forum or any other. On the contrary, I took pains to defend GEN Zinni and other top generals who were savaged by you and your comrades as traitors to the country for their principled opposition to an unnecessary invasion of Iraq. I am the one who has been working doubletime to champion the cause of our military and veterans, which has come under such vicious attack by you and yours as you have sought to diminish us and our service to our country. I even founded a veteran's group to counter your malicious and callous efforts to demean veterans like me. In any case, I am frankly amazed at where you dream up some of these dishonest accusations.

Hi RW...

"You should know that I am a staunch Bush supporter overall and have been for some time. I was very bullish about the prospects of President Bush in winning a second term until he decided to invade Iraq."

Do you have any remarks you have made on FR [in other threads] that verify this?

Trying to clear up my understanding. :o)

I expect a former military man with pacifist leanings to be their candidate. Shores up the base, while making hime difficult to attack on defense issues.

That's exactly why I've been saying for 2 years that Bubbette! will pick Colin Powell as her VP running mate. That's a ticket that Bubba-2 can't beat, even though I'm predicting he will pick Rudy Guiliani as his 2004 running mate in a effort to get some of the northeastern electoral college votes.

There are so many lies in that post I can't count them all.

You really are a piece of work, you know that? You're no champion of the military, and your desperate attempts to align yourself with them using words like "us" and "we" are pathetic.

CWOJackson is active duty, for your information. When you were dissing him in subsequent attacks on those other threads, it was perfectly clear that you were very well aware of what "CWO" stood for. Your attempts to re-write history might work for you (since most of the threads were pulled) if so many people hadn't witnessed your conduct.

By the way, who did you call "gay boy"?

Yeah only about every other post I write. Read my earlier comments on this thread to find out where I stand and please don't take my prediction that the President may be setting himself up for an electoral defeat with his Iraq adventure as suggesting I am anything other than 100% pro-Bush. I post my support for our President on every site. I have declared my absolutely loyalty to getting him re-elected and yet that is not enough for the anti-military types and RINOs who regularly hound me and persecute me for my support of conservative Republicans and conservative principles and my attempts to advice to the President on how to ensure he gets re-elected for the good of all America. You don't have to agree with a politician 100% of the time to support him or do you think I'm wrong here? Anyway, despite your earlier derisive remarks against me, thanks for being honest enough to try to get the real story and the truth rather than piling on like a bunch of rabid rats like some other folks on this thread.

Hey, kewl! One of my Senators is #1, and my Representative is #2.

You are very fortunate indeed. John Kyl is a great man. I met him at the CPAC following his speech when I was wearing my trademark American flag tie. He told me, "I don't know whether to compliment you on your tie or salute it." I wish he would run for Majority Leader or Majority Whip. Jeff Flake is an amazing conservative hero in Congress as well. You are lucky to have him. I have to put up with Tom Davis.
