Defeating Walter Mondale - It's Easier Than Most Think (Vanity & Flashback to 1984)

Wellstone's gone, but the politics of his legacy live on.

Democrats have decided to go back to the late 70's and early 80's to "revive" one of their party's dinosaurs - Walter Mondale. "Back to the Future" I guess we can say.

Some pundits say Wellstone's death is going to "energize" the Democrats. If that's so, why did they pick Mondale? Simple: Walter Mondale represents everything the Democrats stand for, notably HIGHER TAXES.

In 1984 when Mondale ran against President Reagan, he decided he was going to "straight talk" the American Poeple. His platform was simple:

"I'm not going to lie to you, I am going to raise your taxes."

In Presidential Debate #1, Walter Mondale told the American People that Ronald Reagan was a "liar" and was going to raise their taxes if he was re-elected. Mondale's strategy (which was an abysmal failure) was to tell us all that should he be elected, he'd raise taxes nationwide.

Coleman's campaign would do well to go through the 1984 Presidential debates and find the quote I described above. If Democrats are right, and Wellstone's death has "energized" their base around Mondale, here's the perfect way to counter it. You counter the sympathy vote by attacking your NEW opponent, without mentioning Wellstone at all.

Remind people of Mondale's failed past. The 10% undecided in Minnesota are very winnable for Coleman but he absolutely MUST tell them why they don't want Mondale the Dinosaur.

A vote for Mondale = a vote for the past. A vote for Mondale = a vote for failure. A vote for Mondale = a vote for higher taxes, more socialism.

Vote for the future.

If I remember correctly did not Walter Mondale open a restaurant and hotel after he left public office and did he not state, He (Mondale) had no idea of how TAXES and GOVERNMENT REGULATION made it difficult to be a succsess in a small business.

I remember that too, but I'm pretty sure the ex-senator you are talking about is McGovern. He had opened a restaurant or a bed-and-breakfast somewhere in New England, like Vermont or New Hampshire.

Also, I saw Brit Hume and the rest of the Fox Sunday gang literally (verbally) hand the seat to Mondull. Brit extolled what a wonderful, honorable (?) fella Mondull is, and that Minnesota should be glad/proud (I forget which he said) to have him as Senator.

That is disgusting. Everyone is beatifying Paul Welstone ("A great guy", "Everyone's friend") while meanwhile he was the closest thing to a Communist this nation has ever had in the Senate. His views were digraceful and dangerous.

Walter Mondale is an un-American, piece of sh*t who helped Carter try and get the Soviets to manipulate the 1980 and 1984 elections, who fought to castrate America with a nuclear freeze, who is the only Presidential candidate in history to actually say in a speech that we would raise taxes. He must be defeated at all costs.

The Democrats must be DESTROYED. NO REPEAT OF ASHCROST 2000! Coleman must go after Mondale with guns blazing and defeat the son of a bitch.

You're right about that. Along with the willing accomplices in the media who are still offering a Wellstone lovefest. Watch for dems to stall till the last minute, so that Repubs get minimal chance to mount a counter attack. The dem side of the Senate will become a geriatric graveyard, if the current trend keeps up.

You are incorrect - that statement was made by George McGovern after his disastrous defeat in his run for President. He later admitted ruefully that, as a politician, he had participated in encouraging laws and behavior that came to haunt his role as a small businessman. Additionally, I believe he or least his investment had to go bankrupt.

Since when have the national "experts" every understood the quirky stew of Minnesota politics? According to them Governor Hubert H. Humprehy, III should be a shoo-in for re-election this November.

I have yet to see a compelling argument as to why Mondale will automatically inherit all of Wellstone's coalition. The far left who liked Senator Socialits are no great fans of Fritz. Those independents who were drawn to Wellstone's maverick image are unlikely to be attracted to Mr. DFL Politics as Usual, Senior Tour version.
