Sniper: "Word is Bond" and "I am God" (part of theology of Nation Of Islam offshoot)

The sniper made a big deal of the phrase "Word is Bond". MSNBC went with the origin of the phrase being from a rap song. But it goes deeper than that. The phrase "Word is Bond" is associated with the The Five Percent Nation :

The Five Percent Nation (or The Nation of Gods and Earths) is an offshoot of the NOI that was founded in 1964 by Clarence "Pudding" 13X, who broke with Elijah Muhammad, changed his name to "Allah," and refashioned the theology of the Nation of Islam. He taught that the black man was God and that his proper name is "Allah," that 85 percent of the masses are ignorant and will never know the truth, that 10 percent of the people know the truth but use it to exploit and manipulate the 85 percent, and that only 5 percent of humanity understand the "true divine nature of the black man who is God or Allah."

...

Rap lyrics are laced with Five Percenter references (for example, on "Rawhide," Method Man rhymes, "I fear for the 85 who don't got a clue"), and numerous hip hop expressions and slang derive directly from Five Percent Nation terminology. The expressions "Word is bond," "Break it down," "Peace," "droppin' science" and "represent" all come from Five Percenter ideology.

There also seems to be usage of the phrase "WOrd is Bond" in conventional Nation of Islam, as indicated by this reference
Lesson number one, question number 11 says:
HAVE YOU NOT LEARNED THAT YOUR WORD SHALL BE BOND REGARDLESS OF WHOM OR WHAT?
A. YES. MY WORD IS BOND AND BOND IS LIFE AND I WILL GIVE MY LIFE BEFORE MY WORD SHALL FAIL.

I have a feeling that the cryptic phrases were Mr Muhammod's way of communicating to fellow Nation Of Islam members that he was one of them, and they should join him

I still have not heard what temple,if any this guy worshipped at,or if he was a NOI muslim,or aligned with middle east muslims,or what exactly his affiliations were.Everything I've heard points to NOI. I'm sure if he did worship at a temple, the temple is in no rush to claim him as a member.

So did "Pudding" formulate his Islamic teachings while on an acid trip or was he just mentally ill?

The people from NOI who these clowns associated with should come forward or be arrested as material witnesses.

Unless the PC gods will not let that happpen.

They showed it on local Seattle tv news.....a storefront mosque with name something like Ali Wazii....wish I'd written it down exactly. It was a slummy looking place.

Word is Bond sounds a lot like " Word Up " : Street rap, in other words. The 5%ers were supposed to have vanished from the scene in the 70's, as I recall. Their "calling card" was a shot in the back of (any old) White victim they chanced upon.

This said, the Nation of Islam and its various incarnations are among my least favorite folks.

And THAT , is what it be like !

Did the report say he was a regular there? That information has been pretty low profile,as all the religious facts have been with this case.I'm curious what the minister at the mosque had to say about him.

I don't know about that, but when I heard "word is bond", I knew I had heard it in thirty songs at least. (I listen to tons of music.) I wouldn't ascribe too much importance to the phrase. It's about as common as "hello" even among suburban white kids.

"He taught that the black man was God"

Well, that would explain how so many could claim to find God in prison.

You hear it a lot in music, because a lot of rappers are members of the Five Percenters. The Five Percenters spread their theology via rap

I could understand the young Malvo being influenced by this hip-hop culture, but John Mohammad seems a bit old to be drawn into this juvenile nonsense. I would think the older man would be more influenced by someone like Khalid Muhammad (New Black Panthers).

The other thing attributed to music was the five stars at the beginning of each message. The five stars though may not actually have anything to do with a band from Jamaca.

Instead, these same five stars represent the five pillars of Islam. There are references to the five stars in the Koran regarding the five planets known at that time. These five stars (planets) and there ascention/descention was apparently tied in with the prayer times in Islam. I may have misunderstood, but it seems this tie-in applies more to early Islam.

The five stars can be seen on flags belonging to many countries along with the crescent moon.

I could have easily misunderstood something in my research about the five stars so anyone who wishes to correct me is welcome. I am not expert on Islam. Hell, I'm a Lutheran and I can't remember much from the Small Catechism (sp?) either!

Your correct. Islam was in its origin a star cult, and Allah was the moon god. So astrology plays a big part in its pagan roots. The five sided pentagram star also is a refence to both the star of Ishtar, the 5 planets and the 5 pillars of Islam.

The Muslims also hold the Kabba stone as a point of worship. The Kabba is a meteorite. This fascination with the stars may explain the NoI's incorporation of UFO-ology and numerology in its belief system.
