The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home
.
.
A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Toad Suck Daze
Long ago, steamboats traveled the
Arkansas River when the water was
at the right depth. When it wasn't, the
captains and their crew tied up to wait
where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now
spans the river.
While they waited, they refreshed themselves
at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the
folks living nearby, who said: "They suck on
the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence,
the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone,
but the legend and fun live on at Toad Suck Daze.

I hope you got to hear the Patsy Cline that MoJo played for us. Patsy was such a good singer. Congrats to your son on Army jump school. Linda is more brave than me. I prefer staying in perfectly good airplanes. Thanks to both you and your son for your services to our country.

"What Is A Brother" is a beautiful poem, Tonkin, and perfect for the Canteen. Thank you for posting it.

Bungee jumping?
YOU DID WHAT? OMG, now I have to worry about you jumping out of a perfectly good airplane too? Worrying about Linda was hard enough.
To: Kathy in Alaska; MoJo2001

Duchess, have you ever jumped out of a perfectly good plane or done any bungee jumping? Or are you like Kathy and me, liking to keep your feet firmly planted on something solid? hehehe!

The flower arrangement is perfect for getting the mood set for Halloween, Tonk. It's beautiful.

Well, I've never DONE it, but I think I probably
could bring myself to jump out of a plane. If I had to. : )
Bungee jumping doesn't appeal to me. At all. : ) So I guess that makes three of us, huh? I think I could even pass on living it vicariously through Linda and MoJo - but I DO admire their courage! Very cool!
To: RadioAstronomer
Sweet dreams Starman, thank you for today.
To: redhead
Hi redhead, I hope you were able to join us Girlz in bumper boats. We've been missing you. Thanks for the southeast description of travel. What other state has a capital that you can't get there by car?
To: DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet; Kathy in Alaska; MoJo2001; LindaSOG; Snow Bunny
LOL! I admire anyone who has the guts to do anything as as exciting as jump, be it out of a plane or on the end of a BIG rubberband. I'm such a chicken. cluckcluckcluckcluck.

Were you gutsier when you were younger, though? I look back on some of the stuff I did when I was twenty and I SHUDDER. WHAT WAS I THINKING? LOL
To: DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet; radu; LindaSOG; MoJo2001
That's the word that's been trying to get out of my brain: vicariously! I can be perfectly content living vicariously thru Linda (and my kid if I must). LOL!
To: DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet
hahaha! I was LOTS gutsier. I lived in treetops...as high as I could go without the tree snapping and dropping me to the ground. My Mom once told me I had a habit of picking the most brittle variety of trees to climb and she just knew I'd never survive to adult-hood. Somehow, I made it.
I shudder when I think of some of the things I did when I was younger. I don't know why I lost my nerve for daring things. No bad experiences to explain it or anything. Just - poof! - and I became a chicken.

LOL radu - I'm sure you're NOT a chicken!
But honestly, I think that's part of the reason I feel so appreciative of those who protect us every day. They do things I wouldn't dream of doing, and it's routine for them. Amazing.
To: DaughterOfAnIwoJimaVet
You've got that right!! I was married to a Marine in the early '70's and got a pretty good idea of what our troops do and that's when I got a healthy respect for our military.
