President Bush and First Lady Laura greeted Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his wife, Wang Yeping in Crawford, Texas today. Bush and Zemin will be discussing the situation in North Korea as well as the war on terror. The President also issued a statement regarding the untimely death of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone. The flag over the White House was lowered to half-staff in honor of Wellstone. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!

I'm not sure what the statute is, if there even IS one. Maybe each state makes up its own rules in this regard. I guess we'll have to wait and see. If Jesse appoints someone, and Wellstone's opponent wins, the appointee only stays in until the new Senator is seated, I believe. Jesse may wait until after the election to see how it goes. If Wellstone's opponent wins, Jesse may go ahead and appoint him so that there will be less confusion come January. Of course that would give control back to the Repubs, so I suspect Jesse will be coming under MASSIVE pressure to appoint a Dem NOW rather than wait for the election.

Is the Senate in recess right now? I thought they had all gone home so that those running for re-election would have some face time at home. If that's the case, then there is really no hurry for Jesse to appoint anyone before the election.

I was trying to get an understanding as to why Carnahan was up for election. She replaced her deceased husband after he was elected posthumously. Trouble is, a Senate seat is for six years at a time. It's only been two years. Maybe this is a stipulation of Missouri law. Understand my confusion regarding this issue ?

I think that's exactly what he is doing. I think he knows how to explain things and even if the Chinese pres still does not agree with him, he will go back home with more respect for our president.

They think some of the terrorists took clothes from the hostages and escaped when the hostages were freed.

Has anyone heard HOW the Russians got the hostages out w/o the explosives that were taped all over the inside of the theatre being set off?

You posted on the other Daily Dose. Actually, there were three of them. Rintense got caught in the delayed posting server problems. One of the Doses had no other posts, one had yours, and this one became the main thread.

Congratulaions on being first (along with MamaB).

The other three were dressed in dark blue coats and open neck dress blue shirts. Condi apparently didn't get the memo on "the dress for the day".

The Missouri law is convoluted, but here is an explanation. She serves for only 2 years, because the voters of Missouri actually elected her deceased husband as Senator, and the Democrat governor appointed Jean to fill his seat. However, he could only appoint her until 2002, when a SPECIAL ELECTION is to be held, at which time, Jean herself will have her first shot at getting elected.

thanks. What I am wondering is how the timing of an election affects the 100 seats of the Senate election cycle ? Doesn't 33 Senators run for office during one cycle, another 33 Senators run during another cycle, and finally 34 Senators run during another cycle ? Adding a Senate race to one of these cycles would seem to violate Constitutional edicts.

Electing a dead person to a senate seat violates Constitutional "edicts" as you put it, as well as state law, but it didn't stop Jean Carnahan or the DemoRATS.

"...if everything else stays the same, except for a Talent win, We'd STILL have one more Repub than Dems on Nov. 6th and could take back control of the Senate without having to wait until January! Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I thought I read this on another FR thread the other day."

Yer information is correct...if talent wins MO, Pubbies take over the Senate on 6 November...MUD

Does anyone else feel like we have finally stepped over into the Twilight Zone?

The probable truth is that we are all in Purgatory.

I've been afraid to check the news on how much carnage occurred in Moscow. I spent half the day crying and praying as we seem to lurch from one horror to another.

I was very upset by Senator Paul Wellstone's death. The laws of physics are implacable, and Democrats in particular don't seem to believe that science doesn't make exceptions for 'nice people', but the indifferent reaction of the liberal media to his death was even more shocking than their reaction to the terrorist attacks on 9/11.
