Boycotting opportunity
Spartanburg Herald Journal ^ | 25 October 2002 | Editorial Staff

The NAACP sent a letter to Daimler-Chrysler urging them not to locate a plant in South Carolina because of the poor race relations in the state.

But the group’s boycott does nothing to build race relations. Denying economic opportunities to South Carolinians and tying the state to poverty will not improve race relations or any aspect of the state’s life.

Whether the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s efforts had any impact on Daimler-Chrysler’s decision to reject South Carolina is in dispute. Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes says it came up during his talks with the company. Gov. Jim Hodges and company executives say it wasn’t a factor.

But the intent of the group was clearly to sabotage the economic development efforts of the state. And NAACP officials say they will continue to write companies to urge them not to locate facilities in South Carolina.

Why is the NAACP trying to keep South Carolinians from better paying jobs and prosperity? Because it isn’t satisfied with a compromise over the Confederate flag.

The truth is that this boycott is an overreaction. The NAACP genuinely achieved its goals in the controversy over the Confederate battle flag. It was moved off the Statehouse dome and out of the House and Senate chambers. It was relegated to the Confederate soldiers monument on the Statehouse grounds.

The flag was moved from a position of sovereignty to a historic perspective. There is no reason to continue this fight, particularly when you consider the NAACP’s action toward other states.

The group wanted Daimler-Chrysler to choose Georgia instead of South Carolina, but Georgia still includes the Confederate flag in its state flag. While South Carolina flies one Confederate flag over one historic monument, Georgia flies the Confederate emblem in its state flag over every state building.

Mississippi also incorporates the Confederate flag into its state flag, but the NAACP decided not to boycott that state.

How can the NAACP justify its continued action against the Palmetto State in this context?

It’s time for NAACP officials to recognize that they are not helping the state, that they are not improving race relations and are losing their credibility through this indefensible boycott.

How can the NAACP justify its continued action against the Palmetto State in this context?

Because the spineless politicians of South Carolina showed weakness by not allowing the people to vote on the issue, and by "compromising" with the NAACP. The NAACP, like the pack of hyenas they are, smelled blood and are now circling the state, looking for a kill.

The people of Mississippi were allowed to vote on the issue, and stood up to the NAACP and sent them packing back to SC in search of easier prey.

In order to keep the black vote on the Democratic Plantation they need to keep the blacks dependent on the Democratic masters.

The newspaper simply does not grasp the function of the NAACP. It has never been about improving race relations. Quite the opposite. It was founded by White Socialists to disrupt race relations. (See Creating Hate In America Today.) It has seldom deviated from its historic mission of evil.

worse than that, the naaLcp AGREED to the "SC flag compromise" and THEN went on with their PRE-PLANNED boycott.

the leadership of the naaLcp are CREEPS/LIARS/RACISTS/$$$$$-hungry. nothing more, nothing less.

a MAJORITY of their current members are politically naive OR useful idiots.

i am NOW ashamed that i USED to be a MEMBER!

since the 1970s, when we redmen were told we were NOT welcome to be members of the naaLcp, i've taken every opportunity to point out WHAT the CURRENT leadership of the organization NOW IS!

given their hatefulness toward "my people", one MUST assume that "us blanketa$$ injuns" are NOT coloured people!

I live in South Carolina. I do not agree with the NAACP--who desperately need to update their name for political correctness. However, this flag is a symbol of hate in a lot of cases. I see it too much in the wrong sitations. It would be fine if it was just associated with someone's grandaddy that served in the war or the quaint way of southern life, but unfortunately some groups carry this flag to intimadate. It needs to be removed from federal property. Let Maurice Bessinger fly it at his store, that's his right. It's been taken down from the state house finally. Let's all remember this war and flag was against the United States of America let's not keep it tearing us apart. By the way I am white and a republican.

My ancestors came from Missouri, and I resent the implied "pure white and holy United States" being aggressively made war on by the Southern States. The South did what the Founders believed was a natural right 'Governments are founded by the consent of the governed, and are given just powers (meaning limited) to secure these ends (meaning Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness); when a government becomes abusive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.' That is why the 13 Colonies seceded from Great Britain in 1776! And when the South seceded in 1861 the North illegally made war on the South to forcibly keep it in the Union!

Dig deep and find out the truth of why the South seceded in 1861. If you believe it was over slavery, then you are dead wrong. Open your eyes, and you'll find that the Confederate Flag is the symbol of the struggle for freedom, whereas more human rights abuses occurred under the Stars and Stripes than were ever committed by the Confederates under the Southern Cross. The flag of the Confederacy has been maligned because it was adopted by the racist organization KKK ... but look at the flag that was prominently displayed during the KKK rallys and marches during its heyday in the 1920's! And if you're implying that graveyards and State capitols are Federal property, then you are definitely out of touch!

Because the States right of self-determination was all but completely snuffed out by the Union's subjugation of the South, you now think the Federal Government has the absolute right to dictate what any state does, and special interest groups can dictate what all of us are allowed to do. NO SIR! I AM STILL FREE AND SELF-DETERMINATE AND I WILL FLY MY BATTLE FLAG PROUDLY!

Just cause Lee surrendered don't mean I did!

I saw that the Charleston Post & Courier also editorialized against the NAACP's actions, but you can bet your bottom dollar The Greenville News and The Columbia State newspapers won't say a peep about the NAACP's dispicable actions. But then, that would take guts, something most of S.C.'s outside-owned papers don't have. Must be nice to be an utterly intolerant anti-social group such as the NAACP and get a free pass from a majority of the media.

the sacred flag of dixie, no matter what the leftist/hatefilled/ignorant/arrogant fools of the naaLcp, DIMocRATS & damnyankees say, is ONLY about rememberence of our ancestors that fell for the TRUE CAUSE & southron LIBERTY. (BTW, i do NOT want the flag flown on federal property either!)

ANY SYMBOL can be misused! the cross of our Saviour is so misused, as is the flag of the USA.

do NOT be deceived by the liars & damnfools; the flag today is ONLY about FREEDOM for the southland.
