AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A newly revised forecast by an advisory state panel holds potential for enlarging a government revenue shortfall already pegged at about $240 million by $25 million or more, according to legislative analysts.
The negative adjustments could make more difficult a task that has bedeviled lawmakers and Gov. Angus King for months: matching current spending levels with available resources.

The negative adjustments could make more difficult a task that has bedeviled lawmakers and Gov. Angus King for months: matching current spending levels with available resources. What a concept - having to economize when the revenue drops. I had to do it this year, the friggin' state governments should have to do it as well. But they always make sure that 20 percent of the state government actually does something, AND THAT'S THE FIRST AREA THEY CUT - to convince the public that there is no fat in the budget, as political hacks who have wormed their way into high-level positions are in no danger of getting downsized.

Be sure to factor in the growing Somali welfare population in Lewiston.

Not really, the Beef, or Le Beouf as he is called in some sections of the state, has been a big spending Democrat out to make a national name for himself.

What a concept - having to economize when the revenue drops Exactly. And King keeps putting off pulling everyone into session to fix this! Or at least "work" on it. It's really a mess.
King has his motorhome packed up and all he wants to do is beat it back to VA!

Who does the Morning show up there these days? A braindead pair in Augusta who spend half their time denying that they are liberal. One of 'em even has that smooooth disc jockey voice that makes you want to cram the mic down his throat.

See what happens when you don't give them cigarette taxes. :-}

Are Maine, pack of cigarette, smokers ready for the big tax increase that's getting ready to come?
To: SheLion
This was actually announced on Monday and the papers would not carry it.
I wonder if they are covering it it for Baldacci et al.

I'm no economic genius, are all of these, financially strapped, government entities so dense as to the
core of their problem. It has been talked to death on these threads. Taxation has approached or
exceeded 50% of income. The result, it took some time, is a shrinking economy. The US is in for a
long, long uphill grind. What the hell, raise taxes more.

Well, that's my other problem. I go to school in Boston. The worst of both worlds, with NH in between. I need to get an address there between graduation and my return to active duty Army. Then, I can enjoy not having state income tax swiped from me (for a little while) and I won't be worrying about their property tax.

This was actually announced on Monday and the papers would not carry it. Well, if Cianchette doesn't get elected for Governor, and Baldy does, I hate to say this, because I live in this state. But I hope Baldy can NEVER dig himself out from under this mess his good ole buddy left him!
And I hope that this will be the demise of Baldacci! AMEN!

Are Maine, pack of cigarette, smokers ready for the big tax increase that's getting ready to come? Well, Joe, the $1.7 million down in revenue COULD be the loss of revenue the state was expecting from their huge cigarette tax increase that never materialized!!
People woke up and are buying in NH, the Reservation, the Internet and Roll Your Owns. Perhaps, the State of Maine isn't realizing that huge tax increase from cigarettes. You think????
