Simon Surges as Election Nears
October 2002
California Republican, The Official Publication of the California Republican Assembly
As November 5th nears, people all over the state are flocking to Bill Simon and his message for California. As he has detailed his plans to put an end to our energy crisis, relight the fires of growth in our economy, and fix our failing schools, Californians are realizing more and more that Simon is the candidate who will reverse four years of decline under Gray Davis.
Americas leaders have pledged their support, President George W. Bush and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani already having made numerous appearances with Simon. And as his numbers climb and Simon stands to overtake Davis in the polls, the Republican nominees fundraising totals have begun to match Davis efforts in recent weeks.
His message is clear and his vision compelling: the state of California needs to Fire Gray Davis. It even says so in big red letters on the back of the new Bill Simon For Governor campaign bus, which can now be seen traveling all around this great state spreading the word.
Simon travels all across our state offering common sense solutions to Californias problems, and also, pinning blame where it solely belongs. Simon has been critical of Gray Davis for failing to prevent and then exacerbating a debilitating energy crisis; for enacted higher taxes and gratuitous regulations that have driven our economy into recession; and for failing to fix our schools and graduating another generation of kids who cant read the words on their diplomas.
Simon has trumped his plans for solving these crises, many of which, he argues, are caused by stifling regulations and crippling taxes that have made economic growth impossible, and have left a million Californians unemployed.
In a major energy speech, Simon asserted, "No area more tellingly illustrates the failure of the current administration than its indifference, incompetence and at times, patently dishonest handling of Californias power crisis."
Outlining his policy, Simon says the answer to both high prices and unreliability is increasing our supply of electricity. "Only with greater supply will we ensure that we never see blackouts." But as Simon goes on to say, the solution isnt that simple because the climate of business Gray Davis has created is such that power companies simply refuse to build new plants in our state.
Its a climate hostile to job creation and business growth. Gray Daviss fiscal policies were given an "F" rating by two respected policy analysts, 57% of executives recently named California as one of the worst states to do business, and France just passed California up as the fifth largest economy of the world.
As a successful family businessman, Bill Simon has real-life experience in balancing budgets and creating thousands of jobs for Californians. As Governor, he has pledged to lower the capital gains tax to stimulate growth, cut wasteful spending in non-essential programs, and put the states fiscal health back in order by balancing the record $24 billion deficit created by Davis.
But as Simon notes, every thriving economy has its foundation in a good public education system. "The success of our young people and the prosperity of our state depend on it." By empowering parents and teachers, making accountability mandatory, and building new schools and repairing broken down ones, Simon will give every child a chance to achieve his or her dreams.
With a clear plan of the future, Simon knows with new leadership, California can be the envy of the world once again. And his support for the people of California wont come attached with a price tag. As Simon is fond of saying, "I will restore honor to the Governors Office just as President Bush has restored honor to the Oval Office."
Editorial: Bill Simon is the Best Choice for Governor
October 2002
California Republican, The Official Publication of the California Republican Assembly
The race for Governor highlights a clear choice between a bungling career politician embroiled in fundraising scandals, or a businessman, former prosecutor and "fresh face" in Sacramento.
We at the California Republican like Bill Simon.
Bill Simon has the right experience to address Californias tough challenges of a budget deficit, a lingering energy crisis, a crumbling infrastructure, and schools mired in failure. Simons proposals to deal with these challenges signal a new birth of problem solving, in which smaller, community based solutions are relied on more than big, distant bureaucracies. Simon believes in individual freedom, small government, and most importantly, has an optimistic vision for Californias future.
Gray Davis has recorded one of worst financial performances of any governor in any state in a very long time. In his four years in office, Californias budget has balooned from $74 billion to $101 billion. Davis came into office with a $10 billion budget surplus; now the state faces a two-year $24 billion deficit the largest ocean of red ink in the history of the states. Whats more, the state payroll swelled by 25,000 employees during Davis first three years in office, a larger increase than the next three biggest states combined. Moodys has downgraded California bond ratings twice already, and it may take years for the state to dig out of this fiscal ditch.
Bill Simon has real-life experience balancing budgets and creating thousands of jobs for Californians. As Governor, he has pledged to lower the capital gains tax to stimulate growth, cut wasteful spending in non-essential programs, and put the states fiscal health back in order by balancing the record $24 billion deficit created by Davis.
While Davis record of tax increases, massive government spending, and bungling of the energy crisis are all good reasons for his rejection from office, it is the "pay-to-play" attitude he has brought into the Governors office that should cause voters to fire him.
Under Davis tenure, countless fundraising scandals have errupted because of the Governors insatiable quest for campaign cash. Oracle, Tosco, the High Speed Rail Authority, California Teachers Association, Mercury Insurance, the Trial Lawyers all have been drawn into Davis web of policy for campaign cash.
When any government official ties campaign fundraising to public policy, the consequences for good government are harsh. Decisions are made, not for the good of the people, but for the benefit of the major contributors. Because of this, voters should fire Gray Davis.
Bill Simon will restore honor to the Governors office just as George W. Bush has restored honor to the White House. We say, Simon for Governor!

There! It is better now.
We get deluged with so many Davis campaign fluff pieces every week, I see nothing wrong with posting a positive Simon article once in a while. :)
More seriously, the recent poll numbers show that telephone answerers who claim to be likely registered voters are very unsatisfied with Davis and the direction of California. Their candidate preference (between Simon and Davis) yields numbers that are close. Dump Davis!
You're all your own worse enemy.
