MOSCOW (AP) Armed men entered a Moscow theater Wednesday and took the audience hostage, the Federal Security Service said.
The theater was holding a performance of the musical Nord-Ost, one of the Russian capital's most popular productions.
The Interfax news agency said one of its reporters was inside the theater at the time of the raid. She told them in a telephone call that the men had fired into the air and were preventing the audience from leaving, the agency said.
Police units were on their way to the scene.

Thanks very much for the links and info. It's kind of ridiculous that 99% of the information I've been able to get on this story has been from this thread. To the rest of the news services - I guess it's a 'non-story'.

Yes, I see on sites like the Financial Times and the Dutch NOS Teletext mentioning the freed muslims and that they are muslim rebels.

islam is psychosis.

Were muslims really released or is this information being suppressed?
According to most foreign news sources Muslims were released. It seems our media is very reluctant to admit this.

Regardless, the AP reports that the Chechens tossed a grenade, but apparently the only person hurt was one of the other Chechens, and a doctor in the audience is treating him.
Hey, doc, what's up with that?

We don't have to kill them. We can do what we did to the Japanese here in WWII: intern them. Intern and deport. Deport them to central Antartica.

circumcision among ethnic Russians ... does not happen. Some (not all) ethnic Jews would be circumsized, and I suppose some Muslims. No Orthodox or irreligious Russian would be circumsized. The identification is most likely by ethnic facial type (darker features), perhaps by the knowledge of some prayer or other custom.

There's laws against polluting Antartica.

Were muslims really released or is this information being suppressed? It's being suppressed. Early reports included all of this information, but since we now have the PC Religion of Peace, this has disappeared from US reporting.
Why don't we grow a pair? And despite the name, I'm not even male...

I doubt he has a choice. "Any doctors step forward or we shoot someone".

Thanks for the ping.

Yeah the FNC update barely acknowledged that they were Chechens and that "they wanted an end to the war in Chechnya." Well, that kinda obscures the reality of the situation doesn't it?

The Russian government should up the ante and tell the terrorists to release all the hostages and surrender or else the government would begin wiping Chechen villages off the map one by one until their demands are met. Yielding to terrorism only encourages it.

Yes, this does have an 'in like a lion, out like a lamb' nuance, doesn't it? (knock on wood)

Everything on cable news has been sniper this, sniper that. Even when they have a major story elsewhere (they don't get much bigger, or sadder, than this) they refuse to give it one minute of airtime so they don't take away from the "experts" and the repetition of the same minimal news, over and over and over and over.

The lack of response to Bali was disturbing. I tried to write it off by saying we were too absorbed at that moment by the Iraq war resolution. And that it didn't actually happen in Australia. We'll just have to see how this plays out. Not to mention the blasted sniper!
But seriously, outside of flowers and such at consulates, what else can Americans do? What's appropriate?
