Last updated: Tuesday, October 22, 2002 President makes campaign call to Bangor BANGOR (AP) Mainers awaited President Bush's get-out-the-vote visit Tuesday as Democrats labeled his call as a sign that Republicans are running scared with two weeks to go before Election Day. Bush was due to arrive in Bangor for a 3 p.m. airport rally that marked the start of his appearances to urge voter participation. Bush has attended scores of money-raising events, but the White House said no more were scheduled through the election. His visit at the Bangor International Airport comes a day after Vice President Dick Cheney spoke at a GOP fund-raising luncheon in South Portland in which he predicted his party will see many victories in Maine and other states Nov. 5. The race for one of Maine's two U.S. House seats is seen as a tossup, and freshman Republican Sen. Susan Collins faces a re-election challenge by Democrat Chellie Pingree as the two parties battle for control of Congress. In the 2nd Congressional District, Republican Kevin Raye is in a tight race against Democrat Michael Michaud for the open seat. The Maine Democratic Party said Bush's visit shows one thing and one thing only: the White House is worried about its candidates in Maine. The Senate race continues to be extremely competitive, so much so that the White House has to send in its heaviest hitter to help out Collins, said Gwethalyn Phillips, said Gwethalyn Phillips, chairwoman of the Maine Democratic Party.

Hundreds of happy smiling Republicans formed a line and chattered their way toward the provided busses with nary a glance at the dozen or so peaceniks chanting and banging drums in their designated area.
Five college kids who were calling themselves anarchist got on our bus and they all had tickets to the event.
We could tell they were disruptors from their conversation and sure enough about five minutes after we got inside, security escorted them out to applause from the Republican crowd.
President Bush made his appearance to rousing, thunderous cheers.
Because I'd only seen the President on TV before, I was surprised at his delivery and forcefulness as a speaker. No herky-jerky, no hesitation, just a damn fine speech that had the audience eating out of his hand.
As we filed out, I heard one cop whisper to another, "Look at all the happy, smiling faces." That says it all.
Another difference between Bush and his predecessor. Clinton would only call for oral sex.
I'm feeling pretty upbeat about Republican chances for the 2nd district congressional seat and the Governors office. Even if we don't win, I'm positive that Raye and Cianchette will let the Dems know they were in a race, and that's good for Maine and the country.
And so far the enemy seems to underestimate him at every turn.
Gotta love it!
You think so?
Its really 50-50. Maine's reps are Democrat, Senators are RINOs -- (at least they're Republican). Governor is an Independent who is not running this year (term limits). Lot of hunting and fishing in Maine, lots of farming - so there is a tendancy toward Republican views. A lot of Maine University campuses (campi?) so there is quite a bit of Democrat thinking. Its a strange mix. It is a beautiful, beautiful, state.
