Somebody needs to alert the posters from yesterday who swore that the Bush/Cheney sticker wasn't there because they didn't see it. Looks like MSNBC is wrong, but then again, what would they know, they were actually there.
It is my understanding that the U.S. has a policy of NOT negotiating with terrorists. I don't think Bush would approve such an arrangement.
Yeah, I always thought that the tarot cards were a red herring, but the ransom thing threw me. Not sure what to make of it. I don't think it is a legitimate demand for ransom however. Just not sure how it does figure in.
Ouch! Smart, but cynical. LOL!
I've been leery of a lot since the shootings began, particularly after the boy was shot. For the last two weeks, I have made sure to run errands when my children aren't with me for fear I'll be shot when they're with me, or, even worse, that one of them will be shot right in front of me. I have the luxury of doing these errands alone because my ex-husband has the kids half the time; I'm also fortunate in that my kids aren't school-age, and I walk them into the house of my daycare provider every morning I have them.
I told my ex-husband that there will be no trick-or-treating this year unless the guy is caught. I doubt he will be, though if he is, I'll still be wary of copycats. Most likely we'll get all dressed up and have candy at home. FReeper mhking suggested hiding candy around the house, which I think is a capital idea. My ex thought I was being ridiculous to not let the kids go trick-or-treating this year (even though I walk with them up to the house, instead of turning them loose on their own or even at the end of a driveway), but ridiculous is as ridiculous does. It would be foolhardy, IMO, for parents to let their children out in the dark just for the sake of some candy.
This latest threat, the explicit one read by Moose this afternoon, won't change how I conduct my life, because I was already freaked out enough to change simple things about what I do with my kids in public. But I sure found it chilling to hear it read verbatim like that. As some others have expressed on here, this afternoon was the first time I have cried throughout this thing. Specifically and explicitly stating an intent to harm children is the lowest blow of any that could be given. Them's fighting words. I'm angry now, and more scared even than before. That bastard can shoot me all he likes, but my dander's all kinds of up about the stated threat to my babies.
That DID have a tinny sound, didn't it?
How about if he was a Kosavar from the fighting in the former Yugoslavia circa 1991, with experience in Sarajevo at shooting at women and kids?
Trained and experienced as a UCK/ Kosovo Liberation Army sniper, and now from a force whose standard weapon is the 5,56mm/ .223 FAMAS *Clarion* rifle. He'd be quite familiar with the ballistics of the .223 ammunition, if not necessarily with the use of an M16A1 or similar rifle. And multiple language skills, to boot.
I wanna sniper outfit for Halloween!
Right on.... like the two dimbulbs in the white van at the pay phone yesterday. I think someone TOLD them, and maybe paid them, to do what they did - a diversion of sorts, and another yank on the old chain.
Them's fighting words. I'm angry now, and more scared even than before.
I believe that is exactly how they want you and everyone else to feel. They just upped the ante.
If you are referring to the MSNBC broadcast I mentioned where the anchor looked at some info and asked if it was okay to share it with the public, he did because he got the answer from the producer just off stage that they had been authorized to share it. I think it was the part about saying there was a mention or hint in the letter from the sniper concerning money.
Whether that authorization was true or not I he did check when he seemed surprised to see it in the text or telepromter, whatever it is they use. I think they figured since it was already being reported in the newspapers down there that it was public domain.
I say they pay the ransom money in really good counterfeit, marked bills...then be ready to pick him up when he uses them the first time. (especially alerting all banks, travel agencies and airlines in the QT to call the hotline the instant they get a counterfeit bill from ANYONE since they all use those little pen markers to check the bills now in businesses. (I say the banks too in case he decides to deposit any money and charge a plane ticket.)
I probably haven't thought it through enough to be a plausible idea but it's fun to dream! (Which is the ONLY thing fun about this situtation.)
I don't know which of the things you mentioned they'd do and which they would not but I will admit they seem more desparate and scared than ever as we approach this election. (The dems, not the voters!)
The city crouches, steaming
In the early morning half-light
The sun is still a rumor
And the night is still a threat
Slipping through the dark streets
And the echoes and the shadows
Something stirs behind me
And my palms begin to sweat
Sometimes I freeze
Until the light comes
Sometimes I fly
Into the night
Sometimes I fight
Against the darkness
Sometimes Im wrong
And sometimes Im right
Coiled for the spring
Or caught like a creature in the headlights
Into a desperate panic
Or a tempest of blind fury
Like a cornered beast
Or a conquering hero
The menace threatens, closing
And Im frozen in the shadows
Im not prepared to run away
And Im not prepared to fight
I can stand to reason
Or surrender to a reflex
I will trust my instincts
Or surrender to my fright
Sometimes we freeze
Until the light comes
Sometimes were wrong
And sometimes were right
Sometimes we fight
Against the darkness
Sometimes we fly
Into the night
Blood running cold
Mind going down into a dark night
Of a desperate panic
Or a tempest of blind fury
Like a cornered beast
Or a conquering hero
Not a chance. I heard on a news radio station yesterday that they have already hired an imigration lawyer and will most likely not have to be deported.
Many thanks for untangling my confusion about French vowels.
Perhaps we can get the French to surrender to some vowel deficient Balkan country and gain the benefit of some cross cultural vowel transfer as a result.
Best regards,
