A couple of thoughts -- forgive me if I'm repeating -- I didn't read through all the posts --
(MidEast angle) Number does not belong to the killer but to an embassy somehwere in the world where there is no U.S presence. Accomplices make their demands while they're operative moves on in the field.
My guess is that the lid is being kept tight on this perp out of fear that any confirmation of a terror source may be a trigger for other sleeper cells to activate...

Yeah really!! That would just be too easy, though. I know the police have been tight lipped about any clues but it doesn't seem like there are many. The cops' silence about clues could just be because they don't have any.
This one is not going to be so easy to solve..IMHO

Yes, I noticed that, too.

Has it been reported conclusively that he was only shot once? Yes. Shortly after surgery.
To: Hank Kerchief
How long does it take to re-aim after shooting without mounting the rifle on something fixed? Could that possibly have been two snipers, same target?

NBC12 ( in Richmond) reports via crawler that all Tri-cities (Richmond, Hanover, Ashland, Chesterfield) area schools will be closed Monday. I'm sorry, but that seems to be an over-reaction to me. And, as a school employee, despite the fact that I get a paid day off, I think that we are letting the sniper win by doing this...
No, this is a win situation for the kids who are forced to attend dumbing down sessions sponsored by our liberal federal government.

Thanks. I'll have to get that issue of the National Enquirer the next time I'm in a supermarket. Even if the article says no more than you've reported, they deserve the circulation -- hey, the anthrax terrorists attacked them. That must mean they're doing something right.

Or a prankster.I thought the same thing, too.

If they hace closed the school it sounds like the perp may have indeed contacted Law Enforcement, yup,I believe somthins up alright. A talking head on FOX news Sunday ( terrorist expert not afraid to say "terrorism") said the snipping could have just been a diversion - keepng attention elsewhere so the real killers could work on something MUCH bigger.

I think it might be. I don't remember the details. Was it that somebody had somehow gotten a code that changed on a daily basis, or something like that? I was just sitting here racking my brains for that, because I vaguely recalled that something to do with secret codes had been involved in the decision not to return directly to Washington.

Why close the schools at this point in time?
What do we close down next?
Amazing story unfolding......
To: Lucas1
...logic in closing schools Beats me, but if I were going to guess, I'd say there was some mighty specific information associated with that message left for the Moosemeister. Kind of like the last message left by the Zodiac to elicite panic in the police.
To: txdoda
If, as now seems likely, the sniper has made demands on the police (including NOT mentioning the messages he's leaving), then it's entirely possible that the Home Depot shooting was "punishment" for leaking the tarot card.
Now he's left another message, and the police are acknowledging that they received it and are complying with the demand, even to the point of deliberately misrepresenting what the recent message said.

Any one of these kids in school yours? I'm walking across that parking lot, too. And I value my life just as highly as anyone. Perhaps you didn't read my whole post. And considering that my school has made national and local news recently (new 46 million dollar school, every kid issued a laptop, etc.), I'm thinking we make a mighty nice target (plus we are surrounded by woods...).
On the flip side, more people die every day in Va. from car accidents than to the sniper. Should we cancel schools because kids might get killed in a wreck on their way in? If the sniper made specific threats against schools (something we haven't heard about that only the police know), then by all means close them! But, simply closing them because he's in the area...
BTW, what happens Tuesday? If we don't catch him tomorrow, do we keep the schools out indefinately? How long do we keep them closed?
To: eno_
Might very well be similar..there's a possibility that there's something going down, and the police aren't releasing the info due to mass hysteria...People are panic-stricken now, can you imagine what would happen IF they were told more?...However, if this was the case, 95 and other roads would be swamped..

To all of the geniuses here trashing Moose and his cryptic message you show your lack of maturity. If anyone stops to analyze what he said it isn't at all mysterious. Chief Moose wants to establish contact with either the shooter or the witness; whoever left the message. Moose's statement was obviously discussed over and over in the headquarters and it was deemed highly desirable to go about it in this fashion. Let's hope it turns up something. And all of the children who have posted here should go to bed. You have kindergarten tomorrow morning.
As to the crime itself, I believe when this is solved, hopefully sooner than later, is that the shooter is involved in a "game" where only one shot is allowed for the kill. If you check around on the internet you can find games and "scores" of "kills" and other sniper related web sites.
This sniper believes he is supremely intelligent and have outsmarted the best of law enforcement. This one shot and leave is part of his trademark. He would not be "honorable" if he took more than one shot.

There was a report on the boy's medical treatment in the Washington Post a couple of days ago. It made it pretty clear there was only one shot. By the way, the boy's injuries sound quite similar to those of the man shot last night.
I always suspected the damage described could have been caused by one bullet, just never saw a specific report. I know the boy had a sucking-chest wound, which means the bullet must have entered the chest and penetrated the lung, which sounds like it was a bit higher on the torso than last night's. I agree the other damage does sound similar. Of course, just about every severe trauma busts-up the spleen.
Thanks!
Hank

TOL, I've heard other people say the same thing. However, physics suggests that is impossible unless areodynamics are involved. Bullets start to drop when they leave the barrel and continue to drop throughout their trajectory.
If a gun is sighted in at 100 yards and you aim at a target closer than 100 yards the bullet will hit high. Beyond 100 yards it will hit low. That's just the practical implication of living in a universe with gravity.
A .223 has a muzzle velocity around 3300 fps. That provides a very flat trajectory. It shoots "like a frozen rope" out to 150 to 200 yards. That why gopher hunters love it.
