Easy... He related some type of investigative information that only the police would have... That would mean the sniper is a cop.
Or the number that was left could be some cop's phone, i.e. Moose's.

Moose hung up thinking they got the wrong number? Naw, it was a collect call and the chief wouldn't accept the charges.

Just got in - might have already been posted - but why doesn't Moose call the number that was left? Is there a reason why HE doesn't call the number that was left? Scratching head in disbelief.

Moose needs to make sure he uses the cone of silence when the call comes through....
To: Peach
I think he mixed up his message... Most police agencies have telephone number information that identifies at what address a phone number is...

FNC is. They came up with an odd scenario that perhaps the guy left a number, the police called, he didn't answer, the police took control of that line, and now they want HIM to call them.
I'm thinking that this is some plan by the sniper to contact the police without being traced, but I doubt he gave them his number. like I said before, maybe a payphone, perhaps a random number.

Scratching head in disbelief. Same here! This is really strange!

Moose is a happy - go - lucky guy. Time will tell whether he is a genius or just another babbling, in over his head bureaucrat????
To: Squantos
Simple, the number is to a pay phone. The police can trace the number back. When he calls, the police will be waiting for the call. Why else would Chief Moose say that?

The number the person left is probably a pay phone, the location of which was included on the message. Moose can't release the location of that phone booth; the media would swarm all over it.
Just a guess.
To: PUGACHEV
Chief Moose is a little high strung Maybe the shooter has focused on Moose as his contact and demanded Moose be in charge of communication. That would be very unnerving - esp. if the number was Moose's home phone.
To: dennisw
The call will probably come through on Moose's shoe phone.
