Lautenberg Afraid To Debate (Forrester takes to the streets in answer to Frank's "Anytime-Anywhere")

(METUCHEN, OCTOBER 19) – Today, U.S. Senate candidate Doug Forrester challenged Frank Lautenberg to debate him at the Metuchen Street Fair. Doug brought two podiums to the street fair and confronted Mr. Lautenberg to live up to his promise to debate “any place, any time.”

Two weeks ago, at the Old Bridge Fair, Frank Lautenberg agreed to debate Doug “any place, any time.” Since then, Mr. Lautenberg has ducked every opportunity to debate Doug. The Press of Atlantic City called Mr. Lautenberg’s promise “pure bluster.” The Bergen Record said “Frank Lautenberg has a lot of nerve” for refusing to debate.

Doug Forrester released the following statement:

“It is clear from today’s events that Mr. Lautenberg is afraid to stand up and debate me man-to-man.

“Today, I repeatedly asked Mr. Lautenberg why he voted seven times against the death penalty for terrorists who murder Americans. He refused to answer.

“I repeatedly asked Mr. Lautenberg why he voted to create the tax on Social Security benefits, which forces nearly 400,000 New Jersey seniors to pay $945 every year in taxes. He refused to answer.

“I repeatedly asked Mr. Lautenberg why New Jersey ranks dead last in the return on the taxes we send to Washington, when twenty years ago, Mr. Lautenberg complained we ranked 45th. He refused to answer.

“It is very obvious that Frank Lautenberg cannot coherently defend his horrible national security record, his horrible record of increasing taxes, and his repeated votes to tax seniors on their Social Security benefits.

“It’s a shame that Mr. Lautenberg walked away from the podium we provided. It underscores

his inability to defend his horrible record. New Jersey voters deserve a series of televised, primetime debates.

“As our nation fights a war on terrorism, why would the people of New Jersey elect a candidate who is scared and incapable of debating and has a horrible record on national security?”

If you've heard Lousenberg speak you know very well why he won't debate. He's senile, and incapable of putting a coherent sentence together.

I agree. We're seeing the same "Dems are ahead!" scare BS going on down in Florida in the governor's race as well. Rush predicted that the first thing that would happen once the Torch was yanked was false polls showing the Lout ahead and that's exactly what has happened and what will continue to happen.

Lautenberg won't debate unless he decides it is in his interest to do so. That's why Nixon wouldn't debate HHH -- it wasn't in his interest to do so. Lautenberg knows that the NJ "democracy" will support him simply because he is the Democrat nominee now. People in NJ never saw anything irregular about the change in nominees. They reasoned that it must be proper because the NJ Supreme Court authorized the chang in candidates to protect the "two-party system," a phenomenon not mentioned in the Constitution. People in NJ have been voting Democrat for senator without interruption since 1978. I don't think they will change their minds this year.

The first question at the debate should be "who's going to be your successor the day you step down Mr. Lautenberg? Who are we "electing" here

It isn't "Who's going to be your successor.............etc....but who WE (The Democraps) appoint.....which will be the question and which will also be answered by the Democrap party.................We are in a tailspin and until we realize the depth of the deception of this Anti-American group, we will founder and be swept up and drown in the eddy of corrupt politics............How very Sad!! this should be a wake-up call to our REPUBLIC..........for which is STANDS.........

Another good ad Forrester could run is one showing portions of ads Lautenberg ran or statements Lautenberg made in his own first campaign when he was a much younger man. He was running against the encumbant, a 72 yr. old woman, who's name escapes me now. I have heard it reported that Lautenberg's campaign against her was vicious with the point he kept driving home being that she was TOO OLD to serve out another senate term. Lautenberg is 78 now AND he made it clear when he retired 2 yrs. ago that he had no desire to serve the people any longer. These are the kinds of things, Lautenberg's own words (and if on tape all the better for a TV ad) that will deliver the most punch. I don't believe Forrester should NOT in any way say or imply that Lautenberg is too old, but rather, his ad should point out the hypocrisy of the man!

A closing line of such an ad that would tickle my fancy would be something along the line of, "The age of our incoming senator is not something that worries we the voters, but hypocrisy is!" (Pardon my fautly grammar but you get the idea.)

It's "funny" that the Supremos didn't consider the Green party to be a second party.

I wonder if in the next Senate campaign, if the Green party candidate bails after the filing deadline, if they would intervene so that the Greens could put a different name on the ballot. That which they won't consider for the least of political parties should not be accepted for "the big two".

Thanks for your effort here.

I heard a bit of the Metuchen street debate on the news last night. Forrester asked Lautenberg about something or other and, in the manner of a typical politician, Lautenberg responded with an unrelated question of his own about drugs for geezers.

It occurred to me that Lautenberg was essentially saying that he thinks the way "seniors" get drugs in this country is flawed, and he thinks the government should do something about it. Excuse me! Wasn't he the government? Why is he making a big deal about this now? Where was he during his 18 years in the Senate? What a %#@%ing Windbag!

I agree with your analysis. Forrester has a tough road to hoe and I expect he will lose by double digits. (I have lost an election in New Jersey as a Republican, so I certainly know what direction my former state is headed).

That's all the more reason for Forrester to break out the aggressive, no holds bar approach. It is his only chance. I will say this, New Jeresy's major papers have assailed the N.J Supreme Court for its ruling, and that is saying alot from papers like the Asbury Park Press. So, an aggressive move by Forrester to keep the issue in play with a legitimate request to sign a pledge might garner some support. With 17 days to go, now's the time to light the fires and kick the tires.
